Google unveils new R2.5 Billion cloud region in Johannesburg

The Johannesburg region joins Google Cloud's extensive global network, which now encompasses 40 regions and 121 zones, delivering services to more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

According to reports, this significant investment is projected to contribute approximately R38 billion to South Africa's GDP and help create 40,000 jobs by 2030. The development represents a major advancement in Google's broader R18 billion commitment to accelerate Africa's digital transformation.

Beyond the infrastructure investment, Google South Africa has implemented various training initiatives for learners and business owners. These programs include Cloud OnBoard, Cloud Hero, and Google Hustle Academy, which focus on technologies such as generative AI, machine learning, application modernisation, data analytics, and digital marketing.

The cloud region is expected to enhance Google's existing programs and startup support services throughout the continent, further strengthening South Africa's position in the global technology landscape.
