The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape is currently installing 2 500 locally manufactured Solar Power Units in Informal Settlements in the bay.

Solar power units for port elizabethThe unit was designed and developed in Nelson Mandela Bay by Microcare Solar Components and is a 12 V Solar Power supply with a 100 W PV panel charging a 100 Ah battery to supply power for five LED lights, two USB charging ports and a 12 V socket ideal for a radio or 12 V TV.

This local innovation is been installed by local entrepreneurs who have been trained by Microcare to install the Solar Power Supply units in the bay. Currently over 250 units have been installed as many in the poorer communities of Nelson Mandela Bay enjoys electricity for the first time.
