Green, clean
(law-abiding) Sweden
Travelling to Sweden recently to attend the Volvo
Innovation Forum in Eskilstuna, it was a pleasure to
experience litter-free streets and pavements. I was
astounded, still being in ‘Africa mode’ – I stepped into
the street, jaywalking, not using the zebra crossing –
that cars stopped, instead of blaring their horns and
going for me, with intent to do grievous bodily harm. I
received a couple of admonishing stares, but that was
the level of ‘road rage’ I experienced.
There were fleets of buses running on biofuel,
resplendent in green livery, epitomising the freshness
and cleanliness of non-fossil fuel emissions, while
cyclists kept to their pathways and pedestrians had
right of way. Green, clean and courteous was the overall
impression, while in SA, 52 to 54% of road accidents
involve pedestrians…
During the workshops, innovations and advancements
were presented with enthusiasm and we knew full well
that none of this would hit our shores any time soon,
what with our dirty diesel issues, lack of skills around
technology, stuttering infrastructural roll-out and
rebellious public, generally.
We are so far behind in the technology stakes that, while
Euro VI engines are in the pipeline, we limp and lurch
on Tier II, at best. No secret was made of the fact that
SA ‘has no emissions standards’ to an accompanying
general gasp from the other media members, as all eyes
swivelled incredulously in our direction.
But my question is: would being hit by a biofuel bus
make any difference to a jay-walking pedestrian? I
think not.
So, on that note, be informed and enjoy the read!
