HIGHLY COMMENDED
Upgrading of National Route 2 Section 11:
Coega to Colchester
M
ain contractor Concor Roads & Earthworks is close to clos-
ing out a major South African National Roads Agency (SOC)
Limited (SANRAL) project to rehabilitate the N2-11 from
the eastern boundary of the Coega Industrial Development Zone
to the Colchester intersection, as well as the construction of a new
carriageway to the south of the existing road. Included in its scope of
works was the construction of a new bridge over the Sunday’s River.
This massive undertaking was characterised by several innova-
tions, including the raising of an existing bridge using jacking tech-
niques, access platforms in a river estuary to facilitate construction
of a new bridge and the application of Concor Roads & Earthworks’
proprietary Novachip ultra-thin friction course (UTFC) for sections of
road passing through residential areas.
Site work began in November 2010 and Concor Roads & Earth-
works was granted an extension as a result of particularly heavy rains
experienced in 2011 and 2012, aswell as changes to the initial contract
that saw additional structural work being incorporated into the exist-
ing programme. Deviations from the original planned procedures
made it possible for Concor Roads & Earthworks to achieve a better
overall result in terms of project delivery and the construction team
is on schedule to complete this project in March 2014.
Roadworks comprised the rehabilitation of the existing single
carriageway road (eastbound carriageway) from the 55,68 km to
the 68,9 km mark. Simultaneously, a new carriageway (westbound
carriageway) was constructed south of the existing carriageway.
The dual carriageway cross-section includes two 3,7metrewide lanes,
a 2,5 metre wide outer shoulder and a 1 metre wide inner shoulder
per carriageway with a 17,4 metre wide median.
This contract is regarded as a prestigious project and Concor
Roads & Earthworks has an established track record in the Eastern
Cape region, with several successfully completed contracts delivered
to SANRAL. The construction team has consistently exceeded the
client’s expectations, notably by conducting the successful upgrade
of national highway despite environmental and safety challenges.
