T
he Bucyrus 495 rope shovel is powered
by a 2 MVA Cummins motivator - a
containerised diesel generator that is genset
mounted onto a custom built Martin trailer,
which is pulled by a Western Star 6900XD
truck - powered by a Cummins ISX engine.
"The
Cummins
C2250-D5 generator is
powered by a Cummins QSK 60 G4 engine,
which is coupled to a Stamford alternator
that produces 2 000 kVA at 6 600 volts prime
power. The Cummins PCC 3201 generator
controller provides control and protection
to the Cummins engine and the generator,"
Werner Bester, general manager, Cummins
South Africa, explains.
Cummins South Africa project manager
Jan Maritz notes that the Martin trailer has
heavy duty axles and a jumping beam sus-
pension, which was specifically designed to
accommodate the rough road and challeng-
ing conditions in the pit. "The axles were also
positioned in such a way that the trailer has
a small turning radius to easily manoeuvre
inside the open pit mine."
The Bucyrus 495 rope shovel is a large
electrically powered machine that is used
in mines throughout the world for loading
and moving mining material. Bester adds:
"The Bucyrus 495 rope shovel requires an
electrical supply in order to tram from one
point to the next, and the motivator provides
this power while the shovel is beingmoved."

I
ncreasingly higher energy costs in South
Africa and already high energy costs
throughout the industrialised nations of
the world, makes the installation of SEW
Eurodrives complete Movigear driven, han-
dling system very attractive.
SEW Eurodrive
electronics and product manager, Paul
Strzalkowski, says that this is due to its ease
of installation, user-friendliness, and most of
all, its energy saving capabilities.
“If you take into account that 100% of
possible energy saving is made up of 60%
mechanical optimisation (30% electronic and
10% motor), the Movigear as a complete
system is between 84% and 88% efficient -
depending on which size is used. The motor
design has been used as the benchmark for
the IE4 efficiency rating or super premium
efficiency,“explains Strzalkowski.
“When the South African market de-
manded the release of the Movigear, the
local assembly branches of SEW could not
solely rely on the support and service of the
Movigear from Germany. Readily available
and fast local service and support for all SEW
users is of paramount importance to SEW as
well as to the end user. It was a unanimous
decision amongst the shareholders to add
a complete Movigear assembly and service
facility to CapeTown,“ explains Strzalkowski.
He adds that Cape Town was a natural
choice as home to theMovigear for a number
of reasons. All of the local gearbox assem-
blers are experienced in assembling the FA27
and 37 size gearboxes which have the same
construction and gearing as the Movigear.
Recently CapeTown also became a complete
service and repair facility for servo drives
locally. The Movigear motor is a servo mo-
tor albeit without the encoder in most cases
The Movigear is perfectly designed for
conveyor systems that run continuously but
have varying loads. Movigear is also ideal for
the food and beverage industry.

P
ennWell International announced that
it has made the strategic decision to
co-locate the POWER-GENAfrica and Distrib-
uTECH Africa exhibitions and conferences.
The combined event will take place from
17 – 19 March, 2014 at the Cape Town Inter-
national Convention Centre.The decision to
co-locate these events was arrived at after
consultation with and feedback from the
market. It is clear that given Africa’s unique
challenges and that so many of its utilities
are integrated end-to-end energy providers,
its stakeholders would be better served by a
single event that addresses the entire power
generation and delivery chain. The effect of
hosting two global brands under a single
roof will offer participating utilities and other
stakeholders a much bigger and more com-
prehensive value proposition. DistribuTECH
Africa 2014 with its theme Equipping Utilities
for the Future, is likewise expected to draw
an audience of local and pan-African lead-
ers, planners, technical experts, suppliers,
investors, regulators and policy makers in
the electricityTransmission and Distribution
(T&D) industry, many of whomwill be cross-
over delegates from POWER-GEN Africa.
