abcock sells three ADT models locally, the
A30F, the A35F and the A40F, which – as their
model designations suggest – offer payloads of
30, 35 and 40 short tons respectively. The flagship
A40F is the biggest seller and is particularly popular
with mining clients, including mining contractors.
Complementing the ADT range is the broader Volvo
Construction Equipment range including backhoe
loaders, wheel loaders, graders, hydraulic excavators
and compactors.
“We’ve done extremely well with the entire Vol-
vo range since acquiring the agency in 2000,” says
Vaughan. “Volvo Construction Equipment was repre-
sented by others before us but I believe it is fair to say
that we’ve been responsible for putting the brand on
the map locally – with sales having increased up to
30-fold since we started distributing the range. In fact,
we’re regarded as one of Volvo Construction Equip-
ment’s leading dealers and over three years running
we were selected as ‘Dealer of the Year’.”

While Babcock, the Southern African dealer for Vol-
vo Construction Equipment, is not the biggest sup-
plier of articulated dump trucks (ADTs) in the South-
ern African region, it believes it is a front-runner in
the market segment in which it participates – ADTs
in the 30-t to 40-t class. Says Sales Director – Equip-
ment David Vaughan: “This is a major achievement
if you consider that little more than a decade ago the
Volvo ADT was not particularly well known in South
Africa – despite Volvo inventing the articulated
hauler concept in the 1960s and the Volvo machine
being the market leader globally. The population of
machines in the field in our region is now huge and
we have a number of clients with more than one hun-
dred machines in their fleets.”
