Local pump manufacturer Mather+Platt has
increased stock holdings of the Viking range
of internal gear pumps, aiming to gain market
share by reducing lead times. The company
claims to now have the largest ready stock of
this type of product in South Africa.
Positive displacement Viking internal gear
pumps are widely used in mining and indus-
trial applications across South Africa, where
they transfer viscous fluids up to 440 000 cSt.
The internal gear pumping principle, in-
vented by Viking Pumps co-founder Jens
Nielsen, uses two rotating gears which un-
Carefully engineered scalping panels – used
to remove oversize rocks from crushing and
screening processes – can play a major role
in the effective operation of a plant and con-
tribute positively to its throughput. Yet – ac-
cording to Tega Industries, a leading supplier
of scalping panels – optimisation of this critical
element is often overlooked in favour of other
more visible aspects of a plant which often
call for more costly screening techniques or
even capital equipment upgrades. By remov-
ing choking rock debris from entering the pro-
cess, however, many issues can be avoided
and process times dramatically improved.
In this critical part of the process, Tega be-
lieves that it has acquired considerable ex-
pertise. Having studied and designed dozens
of systems for different processing plants,
the company has learned to adapt technolo-
gies to suit the varying conditions found on
different types of mines.
According to Tega Industries product spe-
cialist Fred Weigelt, the kind of ore being pro-
cessed will determine the design of the rider
bars and will even influence the flare of the

tivity.
At the company’s Vent-O-Mat valve plant,
an automated welding line has been installed
to improve the execution of welding se-
quences on stainless steel components used
in the manufacture of guides and airtight thin-
walled floats.
Vent-O-Mat, one of the world’s leading
valve ranges for the protection of pipelines
against surge, air build-up and vacuum, fre-
quently makes use of components in either
304 or 316 stainless steel, a material on which
automated welding delivers superior results.
The new welding line, which will also auto-
mate the attaching of stainless steel flanges
to Vent-O-Mat valve barrels, centres on a
Fanuc robot integrated with a Lincoln
400‑ampere automatic welding machine and
Binzel air-cooled welding guns, and includes
a horizontal manipulator incorporated into a
lathe-type machine. The automated welding

openings. If designed correctly, this can
minimise deflection and contribute
to ore moving more easily along the
screen, as well as effectively excluding
oversize rock more efficiently.
“Our engineered rubber solutions are tailor
made to individual applications and are de-
signed to provide the maximum throughput
with the longest trouble-free service life pos-
sible. Even considering the harsh environ-
ments they are exposed to, we are still able to
produce products that will perform correctly
and efficiently throughout their extended life-
cycle,” says Weigelt.
He explains that the use of rubber is al-
ways preferable when larger apertures are
required and where large ore sizes are being
processed. In comparison to alternative lin-
ers, rubber provides better impact absorp-
tion because of its relative shore hardness
and flexibility.
Tega Industries’ specially formulated rub-
ber is more durable in applications where
large rocks are fed onto the panels directly
from a chute. The same flexibility also allows

clearing of
materials and reduces the possibility of rocks
getting jammed into the openings. Consider-
ing the cost of breakages or time spent un-
clogging panels, it makes more sense to use
rubber, says Weigelt.
“One of the advantages of dealing with
Tega Industries is our ability to develop cus-
tomised solutions tailored to the individual
requirements of each mine. In line with our
commitment to provide ‘Total Solutions’ to
customers, we invest heavily in research and
development – which means that we are able
to make use of the very latest technology
available to improve customers’ processes,”
he concludes.

DFC upgrades its production facilities
line was commissioned in January.
Other equipment installed by DFC this year
includes a replacement shot-blast machine
and an additional machining centre. The
shot-blast machine was installed in March on
the fluidised-bed paint line servicing Vent-O-
Mat production. It will increase capacity and
better prepare metal surfaces for epoxy paint
adhesion. The additional Accuway vertical
machining centre, currently being commis-
sioned, will improve lead times on the DFC
SKG-F and SKG-W knife-gate valve ranges,
which have for some time been experiencing
increased demand.

Mather+Platt’s range of Viking gear pumps
is extensive, comprising six distinct lines and,
in addition, the company can custom build
Viking pumps for special applications.
In South Africa, Mather+Platt has supplied
the Viking range for more than 20 years.
