outh Africa’s lack of suitably trained conveyor
and belting technicians and engineers is well
recognised, and the CMA provides a number of
workshops and courses to remedy the situation.
These include a six-day diploma course on the Design
and Operation of Belt Conveyors; the CMA Beltsman
Certificate Course; the CMA Conveyor Certificate
Course; the Conveyor Belt Splicing Certificate Course;
and an intensive Belt Splicing Accreditation Course, all
running from one to five days each.

The positive effect that these carefully designed and
highly effective courses have had in the South African
conveyor industry has drawn international attention,
with Turkey being the first country to request that the
CMA run training courses at their Kişladağ Gold Mine.
A second request has been received from Botswana for
training later this year.
Alan Exton, CMA member and highly knowledgeable
conveying engineer, presented two three-day CMA
Conveyor Certificate Courses and two one-day CMA
Beltsman’s Certificate Courses over a period of eight
working days at the end of 2012 in Turkey.

Kişladağ Gold Mine is part of the Tüprag Group, owned
by Eldorado Gold in Canada, which has interests in
Turkey, China, Greece, Brazil and Romania. It is situated
in an isolated area of Uşak Province in Western Turkey,
and is expected to become the largest gold mine in Turkey
in the near future.
The mine is somewhat unusual in that it is an open pit
operation producing low grade, bulk tonnage and uses
heap leaching for gold recovery. It has undergone constant

expansion since 2003, and recently added considerable
capacity to the crushing and conveying circuits, increasing
ore production to about 12.5 metric tonnes.
Conveyor training
The mining and beneficiation process relies heavily on
a complex conveyor system, with minimal downtime
a high priority. It was thus essential that all personnel
involved with the conveyors and ancillary systems be
adequately trained, and the CMA played a valuable
role in facilitating skills upgrade.
Training notes for the students were translated into
Turkish after a confidentiality agreement with the mine
had been signed. For some of the courses, a great
deal of interpretation was necessary as many students
had no command of the English language. Erkan
Annak, the materials control engineer, was appointed
as interpreter and translator and worked closely
with Alan Exton, making lecturing simpler and more
understandable. Training results were excellent, with a
100% pass rate for the three-day course and an 84%
pass rate for the one-day course. A total of 52 students
participated.
Kişladağ’s evaluation of the training indicates that the
CMA has made a significant impact in the transfer of
belt conveying knowledge, which will have a positive
and measurable effect on future mining operations.
It is gratifying to know that the CMA, a wholly South
African association, is proving to the world that their
ability and experience in conveyor training is helping
to raise the level of expertise in materials handling far
beyond our shores!
