Africa rising.
Really?
I
must admit to wryly thinking,
is
Africa really
united? Granted, this was an occasion to put
differences aside and hail the potential of the
continent, but realistically, tribalism, corruption
and cronyism are rife on the continent.
Ethiopian Prime Minister, (and African Union
Chairperson) Hailemariam Desalegn, encouraged
delegates to “create a continent free from poverty
and conflict, and an Africa whose citizens enjoy
a middle income status.” He states that we are
“at a time where Africa is rising,” yet hailed China
for the support that the Asian giant injects into the
continent on the infrastructure front.
Ironic that.
When is Africa going to reach down, grab itself
by the bootstraps and yank itself up on it own
merit, its own abilities and its own potential,
instead of constantly relying on other countries
for charity?
Industrial imperialism is taking place right under
our noses, but because no guns are visible,
Africa is caught like a rabbit in the headlights,
beguiled and bewildered.
In AU Commission chief, our own Nkosazana
Dlamini-Zuma’s words, “the self-reliance and
economic independence that our founders spoke
of remains a bit elusive and social inequalities
remain.”
…And this will continue, as long as we rely on
hand-outs (that come with invisible yet strong
bonds) from overseas investors whose sole aim
is to take as much of the continent away as they
can and sell it back to us, piecemeal and at a
price…
Also, if less money was siphoned off the top and
not re-directed into gaping, private pockets,
we’d be able to generate and distribute the
wealth that this huge landmass is capable of
providing…
So, on that jaundiced note, be informed and
enjoy the read!
In Addis Ababa, this month, leaders from
around Africa gathered to celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the African Union (AU).
