T
he Reinhardt Transport Group is a privately
owned transport company, established by Derick
Reinhardt in 1982. Based in Nigel, it has become
one of the biggest hauliers in South Africa, with
emphasis on chrome-related haulage.
With an annual turnover of R1.2billion and an average
fleet age of 14 months, RTG deputy CEO, Graham
Gaskell states, “RTG is the most technically-advanced
and modern fleet in South Africa, with a fleet size that
enables transportation of large volumes and with
economies of scale that deliver both flexibility and cost-
savings to our clients.”
Operations are conducted under three of the largest,
most successful bulk transport companies in southern
Africa: In Gauteng, Reinhardt Transport, based in Nigel,
Amalgamated Bulk in Springs, and in North West Province,
Chrome Carriers, based in Rustenburg.
A third party logistics service provider, RTG 3PL, engages
transport operators as sub-contractors, thereby offering
the company’s customers greater flexibility in meeting
their fluctuating and varied logistical demands.
According to Derick Reinhardt: “Across the Group,
we share the same approach to business, namely, to
motivate our staff and to do things right the first time
– every time.
MAN: In partnership for the longhaul
Transporting chrome requires reliable and robust trucks, and Reinhart Transport Group (Pty) Ltd left no
stone unturned in finding a truck manufacturer that could offer the best vehicles for this demanding
working environment…
“Furthermore, we are constantly on guard against one
of the major pitfalls in any business – the tendency to ‘get
into a rut’. We pride ourselves on remaining a positive
influence in the world of transport and within the Group
there is never a shortage of innovative ideas regarding
equipment and service.”
The Chrome Carrier fleet comprises 255 side-tipper
interlink truck-trailer combinations, transporting loads
of between 33 and 34 tons of chrome-related products
from the Highveld to Richards Bay and Maputo,
Mozambique.
The TGS units are
backed by a standard
four-year/600 000km
driveline warranty
and a three-year/
450 000km bumper-to-
bumper warranty.
“The MAN trucks we see here today are the
embodiment of extensive customer consultation
and product development by our engineers to build
vehicles that are application-specific and
purpose-built for Africa.”
With a combined fleet of 485 trucks, Graham explains
that the selection process for the recent procurement
of 140 MAN TGS 27.440BBS 6x4 truck-tractors was
rigorous and pitted MAN against a number of top
extra-heavy truck OEMs. All were tasked with providing
