Dr. Chota Motala Road Interchange improvement
project on the N3 highway
T
he Dr. Chota Motala Road Interchange, which is located on the
intersection between the N3 highway and the R33 provincial
route, was not operating efficiently due to the ageing infra-
structure on the intersection and various surrounding intersections,
whichwere affected by extreme congestion during peak traffic times.
The intersection between the Dr. Chota Motala Road and Sanctu-
ary Road functions as a commuter route during these peak times and
the purpose of the improvements was to address this challenge and
provide additional highway capacity.
ILISO Consulting and Aurecon were contracted as a joint ven-
ture (JV) by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd
(SANRAL) and the Msunduzi Municipality to act as consulting engi-
neers on theDr. ChotaMotala Road Interchange improvement project
on the N3 highway.
Life of Mine workshop for Sishen mine
T
he objective of this project is to provide sufficient workshop and
tyre maintenance capacity to support the mine's Heavy Mining
Equipment (HME) ramp-up plan for the next 15 to 20 years.
The construction comprises a new tyre workshop, tyre removal
bays, storage areas and associated bulk infrastructure essential for
future Heavy Mining Equipment (HME) and secondary fleet expan-
sions. The existing tyreworkshopwill be utilised for current and future
needs on drilling equipment.
The LoM workshop will be used for maintaining and servicing
the new haul truck fleet, the largest of which are the Komatsu 960E
mega-trucks, having a carrying capacity of 350 tonnes.
The bulk infrastructure for the new tyre workshop and associated
services will be an essential part of future expansion. The proposed
new infrastructure will also take into consideration all new develop-
ments in the area with specific reference to the new proposed haul
truck workshop and associated services.
Kumba Iron Ore through Anglo American supply chain appointed
WPlWP together with BVi as the engineering consultants in October
2010 to conduct a pre-feasibility and feasibility report for the project
with a specific task to investigate methods to fast track the design,
procurement and implementation phase.
The scope of work includes for bulk infrastructure for the complete
project area including future expansion. The main functions are
truck maintenance and tyre handling.
Construction began inOctober 2011, including the construction
of a laydown area for electrical equipment, and the movement of
the electrical equipment from the site of the newworkshops to the
newelectrical laydown area and the earthworks terrace onwhich the
new workshops and supporting facilities are constructed.
Construction on the main workshop package kicked off on
21 May 2012 and is in full swing with steel erection, sheeting
and mechanical and electrical installation on the main haul truck
workshop, tyre workshop, administration buildings, with 11 KVa
substation being complete.
The pollution control damandWashbay is also nearing comple-
tion. Overall project completion is scheduled for December 2013.
The safety results on the project to date are outstandingwith 427
LTI-Free days (approximately 1,5 million LTI free hours).
At this stage of the project, operational readiness, which
necessitates a high level of client intervention and co-ordination,
is prioritised. This will ensure a seamless handover of the facility to
the end users on project completion.
