The main contractor on the project was Group Five Construction,
in JV with Phambili. The Dr. Chota Motola Road Interchange project
demonstrates innovative thinking and technical excellence on many
levels, which makes it the ideal candidate for the award for Profes-
sional Services. The project’s exquisite attention to detail in the bridge
design allows for the perfect synergy between form and function.
Considerable effort was put into the design of the cross sections and
levels on the N3 overlay, which resulted in significant improvements
to the quality of the road and the traffic situation.
Additionally, the accommodation of traffic measures adopted
by the main contractor, Group Five, as well as the continuous main-
tenance of signage and barriers during construction, allowed for
complete public safety and free-flowing traffic throughout the project.
The project displayed innovation and excellence in both its design
and construction methods.

In order to safely accommodate for over 30 000 vehicles per day,
considerable effort was put into ensuring adequate safety barriers
and contra-flow measures that would maintain two open lanes for
traffic in each direction for the duration of the project. Relocation of
temporary signs and barriers was done off peak and signs and barriers
were maintained 24/7.
During demolition, traffic was diverted with assistance of traffic
police with clearly marked detour routes. The Dr. Chota Motala Road
Bridge was constructed in half-widths, with the existing structure
rapidly demolished within 48 hours in which the N3 was closed.
Given the scale of the project, environmental and social impact
carried a lot of weight during the planning and construction phases.
