ROADS AND BRIDGES
An order for a sand plant –
awarded to Osborn by Gomes
Sand – represents a double
achievement for the company.
Product specialist Shane Beattie explains
that this significant order includes the
first 4250 Horizontal Shaft Impactor
(HSI) manufactured and supplied locally by
Osborn, under licence to sister company KPI-JCI
in the United States.
Both Osborn and KPI-JCI are part of the
Astec group of companies, Osborn is the
American company’s representative in sub-Sa-
haran Africa, offering local service and support,
he reveals.
“We have honed our skills, and the Horizontal
Shaft Impactor is the latest addition to the range
of quality equipment manufactured by Osborn
at our Elandsfontein facility. This unit has been
adapted to fit Osborn’s modular range of primary
truck tip units, and provides valued new client
Gomes Sand with a sand processing solution,”
Beattie adds.
The order also reflects the inroads being
made by Osborn into the construction and
industrial minerals industries, where the
company’s robust, high quality equipment is
increasingly sought after, he states.
In addition to the modular 4250 HSI plant,
Osborn will also supply Gomes Sand with a
modular 2624 VM (Vari-Vibe
®
Modified) High
Frequency Screening Unit and a radial stacking
conveyor (13-3080).
“The high frequency screen is an unrivalled
unit, with the highest capacity in the market
for the removal of fine material,” Beattie states.
“One of the many advantages a high
frequency screen offers the material producer
is the ability to achieve higher production rates
with more efficient sizing when compared to
conventional screens.
“The higher production is achieved by an
aggressive vibration applied directly to the
screen media, the screen is ideally suited for

chip sizing, fines removal, dry manufactured
sand and more.”
He notes that Gomes Sand opted for this unit
because it can efficiently screen -4 mm sand.
“This one exceptional screen will replace three
conventional incline out-of-balance screens at
the company’s Gauteng operation. A real benefit
for the client is that the high frequency screen
eliminates the need for triple handling.”
Osborn offers this unique high frequency
screen in South Africa on behalf of another
US-based Astec sister company, Astec Mobile
Screens. Beattie believes that demand for it is
set to grow with the increasing demand for
specialist sand.
