They will be used as support
equipment in assembling and
maintaining 14 units of some
of the world’s largest mining
machinery – a few of which weigh in excess
of half a million tonnes – the heights topping
26 metres.
Caterpillar equipment being assembled
include three hydraulic 60/60 excavators;
two MD 6640 electric drills; three electric
rope shovels; and six MD 6290 mechanical
drills. These machines are key to the new
production fleet of equipment Swakop
Uranium has invested in, for what is said to
become the world’s second largest uranium
mine, Husab Mine in Namibia.
Barloworld Namibia had considered
similar equipment from other suppliers,
according to managing director John
Hosking. However, none of them was

SUPPORT
EQUIPMENT
Johannesburg-based JLG and Magni aerial work platform and
telehandler distributor Eazi Sales & Service has sold a JLG 800-AJ
26-metre working height rough terrain articulating boom lift and
a JLG 260-MRT 10-metre working height rough terrain scissor lift
to Barloworld Namibia.
adequate to effectively assist in this type
of machine assembly. Safety and efficiency,
local representation, and the impact that
JLG equipment has on Barloworld’s ability
to assemble towering mining equipment,
influenced Barloworld Namibia’s decision
to utilise Eazi Sales & Service. “Eazi Sales &
Service has local representation,” Hosking
points out, “support is close by and onsite
training for our personnel is convenient and
hassle-free.”
“The fact that JLG was selected for
this project,” adds, Eazi Sales & Service
managing director Larry Smith, “under-
scores previous validations that our equip-
ment is among the safest and most reliable.”
He points out that the size of this machinery,
some of them exceeding 25 metres in height,
poses little challenge when using equipment
with the capabilities of the boom and scissor
lifts sold to Barloworld. They are being used
to access difficult to reach areas.
It is envisaged that the equipment from
Eazi Sales & Service will expedite mining
machine assembly in a cost-effective way.
“Traditionally we would use forklifts and
cranes for this type of assembly, and occa-
sionally scaffolding,” says Hosking. “But
with our drive towards increased safety for
personnel and in the working environment,
we specifically chose the JLG 800-AJ and JLG
260-MRT from Eazi Sales and Service.”
Using the mobility afforded by the JLG
cherry pickers and scissor lifts means that
we can move between machines under
assembly far more quickly and accommo-
date additional skilled personnel in the
same place, which allows us to expedite
our welder and mechanic training at each
specific project.
Commissioning of Swakop Uranium’s
newly purchased equipment is expected to
be complete by December 2014. Barloworld
Namibia will retain all support equipment
used for machine assembly and administer
their future use from its technical operations
division in Namibia.
