Investment Analysts Society
award for Eskom’s integrated
reporting
Members of the Investment Analysts Society (IAS)
have voted
Eskom
as the leader in corporate report-
ing in the sector – Mining & Resources for the 2013
financial year. This is the third time in a row that
Eskom has won the IAS award - a bronze statuette of
a squirrel - and the state-owned company is proud to
be recognised by the IAS as leaders in reporting and
communication. The squirrel award was presented
to Eskom Chairman, Zola Tsotsi, at a ceremony held
at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton.
He said: “Eskom endeavours to be a transparent
organisation. Our customer base has grown from
872 000 in 1994, to just over 5,2 million in March 2014.
Our stakeholder base is extensive and far-reaching,
and the responsibility of the company to operate and
develop on a sustainable basis in order to enrich the
lives all South Africans is not taken lightly.”

Alstom Grid energises Jeju
Island in South Korea
Alstom Grid
has successfully energised the second
High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) turnkey project
in South Korea, following the first also delivered by
Alstom in 1997. The newly energised project, awarded
in 2009, establishes a 400 MW HVDC bi-directional
transmission line between Jindo and the island
of Jeju. With 50 million people, South Korea is an
energy-intensive nation, ranked eleventh worldwide
in total energy consumption. Yet, it imports 82% of
the total energy it consumes. Since 2006, the Korean
government has developed new energy policies to
become more energy independent, meet growing
demand and increase energy efficiency. The island
previously operated on an independent electric net-
work; it faced frequent blackouts and unstable power
supply due to the network’s lack of efficiency and low
power capacity.

Pentair Technical Solutions
has launched a web-
site – PentairProtect.com – that will provide an easy
search of their extensive product line-up. The new
site features a customer-first design and is available
in English, French, German, Russian and Spanish for
the initial launch. This is the first in a series of phased
launches throughout 2014 for the new and truly global

’s feature-rich and cost effective NB HMI (Human Machine Interfaces)
series is perfect for any industry requiring a small, affordable basic HMI touch
screen. Offering the best in reliability, the NB HMI series is abundant in offerings
and related benefits. “Often customers require more from an HMI in terms of the
rudimentary offering, the LCD quality or the minimum approval requirements,
and this is where Omron’s NS HMI series comes in as a fantastic alternative,”
saysVictor Marques, Country General Manager, Omron Electronics SouthAfrica.
“The NB HMI series is the ideal replacement for existing monochrome units,”
says Marques. “In addition, the replacement is easy to do as the cutout size is
the same.”
The NB HMI series is characterised by best in class display with more than 65
000 display colours and a wide viewing angle across a 7 and 10 inch wide screen
(resolution 800 x 480). In addition, along-life LED backlightTFT LCD and 28 MB
internal memory, offers customers outstanding solutions.

NewElec
’s KE electronic motor protection relay is ideally suited to detect dry run-
ning conditions in pump applications. User-selectable dry run detection methods
may be either by current or by power factor measurements. The relay detects dry
run conditions on small kWmotors and in applications where a large drive ratio
is a factor, such as withV-belts or large reduction gearboxes. Nuisance load loss
trips are avoided with ‘pump prime time settings’ and user-selectable trip time
delays are all built-in.The relay can be selected to automatically restart the motor
after a given time interval (only on dry run trip conditions).
Jam or running stall protection with user-selected trip levels and trip delay
times, start per hour limitation settings, permissible consecutive starts, short
circuit protection and statistical motor operation data are provided. Phase rota-
tion, over and under voltage measurements are all included features. The thermal
overload curves are adjustable Class 5 to 40 s.
Earth leakage and earth fault protection features are available with appropri-
ate and distinguishing latched LED fault displays. The trip sensitivity threshold
can be set in the range 30 to
1 000 mA.The curve may be
set for instantaneous (trip
delay settings 100 ms to 1 s)
or IDMT. Incorporated into
this is harmonics filtering al-
lowing for far less nuisance
trips when used withVSDs or
high inrush currents.
