MODERN QUARRYING
October - November 2013
The International President’s Council will
run in conjunction with the IQSA’s 45
th
anniversary celebrations next year, at the
Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on
10
th
and 11
th
April.
This is wonderful opportunity to show-
case what we do as an Institute and to
demonstrate true South African hospital-
ity in our beautiful country.
Coinciding with the IQSA’s 45
th
anni-
versary celebrations and the hosting of
the international presidents; the IQSA is
putting out a book covering the last 45
years of the Institute. It will cover the sto-
ries, traditions, look at some of the older
members of the Institute, and provide a
history of the quarrying industry.
Dale Kelly is looking for any memo-
rable photos of old equipment, operators,
humorous stories and characters in the
IQSA. Suppliers are also being included in
the book, which is aimed at commemo-
rating the past 45 years of the Institute of
Quarrying in the country.
The IQSA is looking for sponsorship
for the book at R5 000/page. All company
names and logos will be inserted on the
sponsored page. Please contact Terry Pop at
the Institute for further information, on tel:

T
he Institute of Quarrying’s end of
year function earlier this month held
at The Hertford in Lanseria, was a
great success. Dress code for the evening
was Chinese wear and members took de-
light in dressing up, as can be seen from
the ‘photo booth’ photographs below.
Thanks to Osborn for a wonderful evening.
The musician for the evening was
versatile solo performer Virgil Ellis. Ellis,
who has been making
music since his early
teens, has been part of
numerous popular duos
and bands. As a finger
style and blues guitarist
he took the folk scene
by storm in the 1980s,
which led to the open-
ing of a guitar school,
which he still runs.
IQSA’s ‘last blast’ of the year
Osborn sponsored the dinner dance.
Rob and Wilma Smith were the Best Dressed
couple.
IQSA chairman Glenn
Johnson and Mes Aksie’s
Katrien Henning.
IQSA’s Terry Pop and Petro Potgieter with Zelda
Hertz (centre).
Glenn and Michelle Johnson.
Gert and Ria Coffee.
Terry and Anne Gilham.
45
th
anniversary showcase opportunity
The charity this year was Mes Aksie, a
Hillbrow-based charity organisation that
focuses on reintegrating homeless people
back into society. As we all know, there
are many people that cross our borders
looking for a better life, and are at most,
literally forced to live on the street. Mes
Aksie, gives these and our own people
who have come to the city seeking their
fortune, hope, integrating them back into
society by creating some form of employ-
ment, and helping them to get back onto
their feet.
Once again our members were
extremely generous and the IQSA raised
R42 561 for a truly worthy cause.
