MODERN QUARRYING
January - February 2014
AROUND THE
INDUSTRY
New president/CEO for
Manitou
Michel Denis has taken
up the post of president
and CEO of the Manitou
Group, from January 13
this year, for a four-year
term.
Denis (48) is a grad-
uate of ESSEC, a French business school
and the Ecole Centrale de Lyon, a French
engineering school. He began his career as
a strategy consultant, and joined Dalkia in
1994 to development cogeneration. He sub-
sequently managed the French businesses
of MC International which later became
JohnsonControls, a specialist in industrial and
commercial refrigeration.
In 2003 he joined the Fraikan Group, a
European leader in truck rentals for which he
was CEO until August 2013. Over the past 10
years Denis has been involved in the success-
ful international development of the Fraikin
group.
DPW awards built environment bursaries
The Department of Public Works (DPW)
has awarded full bursaries to 50 learners
(Matric class of 2013), who will study for
careers in the built environment industry.
The beneficiaries were selected from 15
schools that are part of the DPW’s Schools
Programme, which seeks to promote the
teaching of Maths and Science and the
Built Environment Professions.
The selection criteria included schools
with 65% performance average; learners
with more than 65% in Maths and Physical
Science; and less resourced schools in
rural farms and townships. Each bursary
is valued at R120 000 and includes tuition,
residential fees, textbooks, academic pro
jects and a monthly allowance.
In an aside, PW Minister Thulas Nxesi has
suggested that the many scandals, irregu-
larities and overspending might have been
prevented, had the DPW maintained an
adequate complement of technical and
professional staff. He says the department
suffered poor management control, a lack
of technical capacity and corruption, and
was unable to deflect and manage chal-
lenges and weaknesses effectively. [Source:
