Huw Phillips honoured
After 27 years as a full professor at the School of Mining Engineering at the University of
the Witwatersrand, Huw Phillips has been honoured with the status of Professor Emeritus
for his outstanding contribution to the institution. He was also recently named as the 2013
winner of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy’s prestigious Brigadier
Stokes Memorial Award for his unique input to the industry over many years.
“Professor Phillips has excelled at everything he has been asked to do within the
School and was appointed Head of Mining Engineering from January 1986,” says Professor
Fred Cawood, current Head of School. “His main contributions are mainly in the areas of
research, where he successfully supervised 19 PhDs and 40 MScs. He gave the School tre-
mendous service during his tenure as Head of School. His standing in the profession is
extremely high, and he was recently honoured by the Institute of Mine Surveyors of SA, the
Mine Ventilation Society of SA and the International Society of Mining Professors.”
Through its Mining and Materials
Handling Division, Raumix, the Raubex Group
has been servicing the mining sector in South
Africa and neighbouring countries for the last
35 years offering a variety of services, ranging
from bulk earthmoving, drilling and blasting,
and materials handling.
SPH Kundalila and B&E International,
apart from the above services, also special-
ises in processing and beneficiation of ore
and the latter, through its engineering arm,
has design, build and operational (BOT)
capabilities, through which the company
recently attracted an order to supply a new
crushing, agglomeration and stacking plant
at the Tschudi Copper Mine in Namibia being
developed by Wetherly International.
A recently-acquired company, Burma
Plant Hire, also offers and supplies a variety
of small, medium and large plant items to
various mining houses and the construction
sector in general.
Raumix Division’s MD Tobie Wiese, says
these operating entities count most of the
national and international mining groups as
their customers.“The Raubex Group, through
these companies, continues to explore min-
ing-related opportunities in Africa,” he adds.
The group is committed to fostering a
safe and healthy working environment and
ensures strict compliance with the South
African Occupational Health and Safety
Act, 1993, and regulations. A SHEQ working
group, comprising representatives from all
group subsidiaries, focuses on creating and
maintaining health and safety awareness,
uniform reporting, legal compliance, training
and identifying issues associated with carry-
ing out SHEQ functions.
The company has an overall consolidated
Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment
(BBBEE) rating of a Level 3 contributor. In
terms of the construction charter codes, the
group scores highly in the equity ownership,
procurement, enterprise development and
social economic development elements of
the scorecard, with employment equity and
skills development being focus areas for
management in the medium-term.
