MODERN QUARRYING
January - February 2014
New to BLT SA’s range of Samson® bulk
materials handling equipment is the
recently launchedMF0814Tmaterial feeder
on tracks, for enhanced manoeuvrability.
According to Keith Dowie, project
development engineer for the company’s
Samson bulk materials equipment, this
new tracked machine, modelled on the
original Samson material feeder, has been
designed to meet the demands of the
mining and quarrying sector.“These auto-
mated handling systems are designed to
join together fixed and mobile equip-
ment, offering flexibility and an economi-
cal alternative to expansive fixed bulk
SDLG gears up
activities
Babcock’s newly-appointed general man-
ager SDLG, Grant Sheppard, says 2014
heralds a new era for the SDLG brand in
Southern Africa, with a significant invest-
ment poised to gear up all activities associ-
ated with this value-added range of wheel
loaders, graders and vibratory rollers.
Babcock has been the exclusive distrib-
utor of SDLG construction machinery in
Southern Africa since early 2012. With the
focus on aftermarket support for the prod-
uct range, sales of these machines across
the region have exceeded expectations.
In addition to the popular LG918,
LG938, LG958 and LG978 wheel loaders,
recent introductions to the SDLG range
include a 16 t LG9190 grader and a 12 t
RS7120 hydrostatic compact roller. In con-
junction with the new grader, a hydrostatic
compact roller is ideal for municipal activi-
ties and general roadwork.
The LG9190 grader, launched at Bauma
Africa 2013, is being field-tested at a num-
ber of customers to establish comparative
performance against existing equipment.
SDLG machines ae fitted with either fuel-
efficient Cummins or Deutz diesel engines
and feature quiet, ergonomically-designed
cabs that are air-conditioned as stan-
dard and ROPS/FOPS certified, ensuring
the SDLG range meets with internation-
ally-accepted safety standards.
According to Sheppard, there are
over 150 units – mostly wheel loaders
– at work across Southern Africa and
Bacock intends doubling this during
the course of 2014.
Lining eliminates
downtime costs
A Linatex® rubber solution proposed
by Weir Minerals Africa has effectively
extended the maintenance period on a jig
overflow chute at Boshoek ferrochrome
smelter complex near Rustenburg by six
times, compared to the durability of the
original liner.
“Boshoek’s metal extraction plant had
been experiencing excessive wear in the
jig overflow chute, where the 25 mm par-
ticles being discharged onto the overflow
chute had resulted in high wear of a com-
petitor’s rubber lining, which had subse-
quently worn through to the steelwork,”
Weir Minerals Africa’s technical works
manager Christo Naude, explains.
“The grade of the rubber in the origi-
nal lining only lasted between three and
six months in service before a changeout
was required. This type of lining takes a
week to replace, which created repeated
downtime and costly unscheduled main-
tenance on the equipment.
“Our unique and patented manufac-
turing process gives Linatex rubber its
extraordinary physical properties and
outstanding performance,” Naude con-
firms. “The Linatex rubber production
process, unlike other processes, caused
minimal mechanical disturbance to the
molecular structure of the finished rub-
ber, resulting in improved wear life and
thus significant cost benefits. With Linatex
rubber there is no equivalent when it
comes to wet abrasion.”

“The robust MF0814T tracked mate-
rial feeder, with a holding capacity of up
to 100 t, is designed for high accuracy in
discharge control and can operate effi-
ciently in arduous environments. This sys-
tem can efficiently handle materials with
a bulk density up to 3,2 t/m
3
and lumps
up to 400 m,” he confirms. Typical materi-
als include limestone, coal and coke, raw
slag, alternative fuels, clays and shale, as
well as heavy mineral ores.

ous use, including impact loading from

articulated dump trucks and large loading
shovels, providing buffer storage capac-
ity, without the need for large ramps or
underground pits. Since material is drawn
from the tipping truck in a controlled
stream, dust generation is significantly
reduced.
A wide belt design, with vertical hop-
per sides, enables fast track discharge and
the efficient conveying of any material,
without the risk of blockage. Steel apron
bar technology provides the strength of
an apron feeder, with clean operation.
Conveyor chains are always outside the
material flow, which means chain wear is
reduced and inspection is easy.
The robuts MF0814T tracked material feeder is self-propelled and powered by an integrated Tier 3 diesel
engine.
