ell I guess the reason is that
after all these years of writing
about aggregate, sand and
readymix, I know that quality is key, and
this hit home to me recently when my
husband and I decided to add on a down-
stairs study and upstairs bathroom to our
IQSA 45
th
Conference and Exhibition
The Institute of Quarrying Southern Africa
is celebrating its 45
th
anniversary at its
Annual Conference and Exhibition, being
held at The Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset
West from 10-11 April. The conference is
being held in conjunction with Aspasa.
This year the conference will host
the international IoQ presidents, and
there will be presentations from the UK,
Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and
Malaysia, as well as a world-wide over-
view from the Institute of Quarrying’s UK
President, Phil James.
The conference and exhibition pro-
vides an ideal opportunity for suppliers to
introduce new technologies and products
to the top decision makers in the industry.
Please contact Terry Pop at the IQSA on
+27 11 704 5037, or visit:
for more details.
On the second day of the conference,
the keynote speaker is Daniel Silke, with
the Chamber of Mines’ Roger Baxter pro-
viding an overview of mining in South
Africa. These are two presentations not to
be missed.
Wheelbarrows lined up and waiting for the
readymix concrete.
Dead on time, the Lafarge Saldanha readymix truck backs
up onto the site.
Readymix plant situated on a farm at the entrance to St Helena Bay. This is a fairly new operation, and
seems to be doing good business.
Why use Readymix concrete?
home in Britannia Bay.
Readymix concrete guaran-
tees quality because the materi-
als from which it is made, are
themselves subject to stringent
quality requirements; rigor-
ous quality control is carried
out throughout the
manu f a c t u r i ng and
delivery process; and the
formulation and manufac-
turing of concrete is covered
by the SABS and, of course, by
the South African Readymix
Associations’ (Sarma’s) well-
respected quality audit.
With tongue in cheek, I
phoned up Lafarge Saldanha
and placed a small order for
2,0 m
3
of readymix from Beatrice
Louw, the orders clerk for
aggregate and concrete at the Saldanha
plant. The first order was for 12:00 and the
truck arrived promptly and ready to pour
at 11:55.
My second order for 2,5 m
3
was about
two weeks later, and once again, Lafarge
Saldanha provided this small customer
with a professional service, and well-
trained and friendly despatch staff.
There is a fairly new readymix plant
located at the entrance to St Helena
Bay, which is much closer to our home.
However this site is very definitely not
accredited by Sarma and I was proud to
have been afforded the opportunity to
finally practise what I preach! Well done
and thank you Lafarge Saldanha for
exceptional service.
