amdeb, jointly and equally owned by the Government of the
Republic of Namibia, has played a crucial part as contributor
to the country’s socio-economic stability and plans to do so
for many years to come.
Tomeet the company’s objective of acquiringmaximumsustain-
ability to 2050, Namdeb needs to add the deposit at Sendelingsdrif,
about 20 km south of Rosh Pinah and 80 km north-east of Oranje-
mund to their current mine plan. It represents the second largest
deposit, after Daberas mine (about 25 km west of Sendelingsdrif)
and will extend the life of mine along the Orange River and enable
Namdeb to fulfil its strategic goal of sustaining carat production from
Orange River mines beyond 2013.
In May 2010, Namdeb entered a partner to partner agreement
with ADP projects to undertake a feasibility study to harvest the
resource at Sendelingsdrif. The study determined that the establish-
ment of a standalone mining facility will be the most cost effective.
The option was subsequently developed during the extended
feasibility phase to a Class II for implementation.
The scope was to design and implement a complete mining
and treatment solution that constitutes responsible mining, is eco-
nomically viable and sustainablebut alsoenvironmentally acceptable
throughout the life of the project, including construction, operation
and closure while ensuring optimal returns to the shareholders.
The project implementation needs to be strategically aligned with
the Orange River Mines operation as well as the rest of Namdeb.
The Sendelingsdrif project is anN$280-million contract with ADP
Marine &Modular as themain EPCMcontractor. Construction began
in June 2012 with an expected completion date in December 2013.
The construction kick-off started with early earthworks terrac-
ing on which the plant’s main office facilities would be. The office
space has later expanded when the construction of the plant came
into full swing. The site establishment went in hand with fencing of
local historic grave sites and protected plant species. A greenhouse
was also established where other species of plants were relocated.
On site, the construction team rely on visual aids and other
representative techniques to engage and explain the programme
to the workforce in order for them to interact and become part of
the short term planning.
