channel protection.
Multi-Cell is a cellular honeycomb structure
manufactured fromwoven, slit-film tape strips
that are stitched alternatively together, form-
ing three-dimensional square cells.
It provides an effective erosion protection
treatment for hydraulic structures in which
its cells may either be concrete-filled for high
velocity structures (up to 8 m/s), or soil-filled
andvegetatedwheremoderateor intermittent
flows occur (up to 2 m/s).
The cell wall heights provide a uniform
concrete thickness profile throughout, while
its flexibility conforms to any existing surface.
Multi-Cell allows hydrostatic pressure relief
through its joints and can be installed in
high water-table areas.
It is an economical and effective system
that allows for quick, simple and easy instal-
lation, even by unskilled labour, facilitated
by the patented Tensioned Frame system
incorporated into the product structure.
Multi-Cell is rot-proof, resistant to most
chemicals and is UV resistant. It is also ide-
ally suited for use in slope protection and
load support.
Although Multi-Cell is simple to install,
NBS Contractors requested assistance from
Kaytech with initial installations. Kaytech
was happy to oblige as this forms part of
the company’s customer service protocol.
As a result, one hundred metres of channel
was designated for lining with concrete-
filled 100 mm Multi-Cell.
Although the initial installation was
slow at first, as they gained experience, the
labourers were able to work in a more or-
ganised manner. By the time of completion
in November 2012, 500 m
2
of Multi-Cell had
been installed in the storm water channel.
This essential 20 hectare extension,
which will provide a further 25 000 grave
sites; will help to alleviate the critical short-
age of burial space.
