PHILIPS, a global leader in LED lighting, un-
derstands the importance of making the best
lighting decisions. With energy tariffs rising, it
is important to paymore attention to energy
efficient lighting to reduce energy consumption
and bring household expenses down.
With various brands in LED lightingmarket, it is
essential for home owners to understand the im-
pact that high quality LED lighting can have on
their electricity bill, as well as their quality of life.
Good LED lighting looks great and lasts much
longer than other older lighting technologies.
Advantages of LEDs
•
Five times more energy-efficient than tradi-
tional incandescent light bulbs.
•
Much longer life than incandescent and even
other energy saver bulbs.
•
Mercury-free and safe for the environment.
•
Can be used for easily controlled directional
light.
•
Can be used in a huge variety of indoor and
outdoor applications.
•
Cool to the touch, so low temperature
reduces overall roomheat.
It really is time to consider investing in LED light-
ing but choose carefully to avoid any disappoint-
ment. Be wary of lowquality LED lamps as these
may affect the overall effect of your lighting.
Good versus bad LEDs
Colour consistency: It is aesthetically important
that lamps in the same area are the same shade
of cool or warm light. All good quality LED lamps
are carefully checked for colour consistency.
Optical direction and spread: A good LED
directs and spreads light throughout a room.
Thermal management: Ensure there is no
excess heat fromyour LED lamp.
Reputation: Look for a quality brand you know
and recognise.
As legislation continues to accelerate the
phase-out of incandescent lamps inmany parts
of the world, including South Africa, LED tech-
nology is the future. During the 2013 Budget
Speech an additional levy was added to the price
of incandescent bulbs.
Replacing 60W lamps with Philips LED lamps
could save up to 80%of the energy used by
older technologies. As LED lamps have lifetimes
of approximately 25 000 hours consumers will
need to replace lamps far less frequently.Where
previously a 50W tungsten halogen lampwas
used the same job can be done with a 7WLED –
and in areas where a little less light is required– it
might even be practical to choose a 4W solution.
Many of these LEDs will fit into existing lights as a
replacement‘lamp’but occasionally a new fitting
may be required.
When choosing these LEDs make sure they
are properly CEmarked, and that they are fully
describedwith their lumen output (lumens are
the truemeasure of light output), the colour
temperature – warmwhite should be nomore
than 3 000K, preferably 2 700K .
There is no doubt that LEDs are themost
exciting innovation that the lighting industry
has encountered for many years; and LED lamps
are standing up to the challenge of ensuring this
technology tomeet the aspirations and expecta-
tions of the users.
