AS floodlights are often used in applications where
the mounting location is not easily accessible, the cost
of maintenance is one of the cost factors that have to
be taken into account.
Metal halide or high pressure sodium lamps were
traditionally used in these luminaires and these
presented some disadvantages. However, BEKA’s new
and innovative floodlight, the BEKA LEDflood, has
overcome these shortfalls.
“The BEKA LEDflood features unique technical
concepts that have been specially designed for
Africa’s environments and conditions,”says Beka’s
Daniel Kasper.“This is evident in the unique thermal
Innovative LED floodlight
sensor technique, whichmonitors the
temperature of the LEDs on the printed
circuit boards (PCBs). Once a critical
temperature is reached – which could
harm the lifetime of the LEDs – the
current is reduced to a safe tempera-
ture level. This safeguards the LEDs and
ensures that the long lifetime of up to
100 000 hours, as envisaged by the LED
manufacturer OSRAM, is achieved.
“BEKA provides a patented and ef-
fective lightning protection device to
prevent the destruction of the power
supply, drivers and LEDs as a result
of electric surges, typically caused by
lightning. This device is particularly
suitable for exposed pole mounted
applications,”says Kasper.
“The installation process is easy,
since the LEDmodule, power supply
and driver module can be removed for
installation or for any future mainte-
nance.”
He adds that the housing is manufac-
tured of marine grade LM6 aluminium,
which prevents corrosion even in the
most corrosive environments.
“Tomaximise the reliability of the
LEDs, the photometric engine is
completely sealed to IP66. This ensures
that the photometric performance is
maintained over time.
“Many light distributions are avail-
able and, in order to provide the right
light distribution for each application,
BEKA’s application department can as-
sist in selecting the correct optical lens
for this purpose,”adds Kasper.
