The pirates' predicament
Ten pirates were in a tricky situation. Their
ship was leaking and they were running out
of food.
The captain, Black Jack Ketch, spoke up.
"We shall all soon be dead if we stay on the
ship, but one person would have enough
food to get to the shore and keep the
treasure.
"So we will form a circle and start counting
round it. Every fourthman will fall out and
be thrown over board. Agreed ?"
His men all agreed. They formed a circle
and the captain began counting, starting
with the man on his left.
However, after four men had been chosen
in this way and been thrown overboard,
Captain Ketch announced, "That's enough
to the left. It's time to start counting to the
right."
So the count continued, but in the op-
posite direction.
Why did the captain change his mind?
