I
t’s going to be a tough year, exacer-
bated by load shedding and the two
months of low activity that much
of South Africa will experience over
the April and May period. With
the December break added to the
equation, many companies will
be trying to do a year’s worth of
business in about 10months, with
poor power supply! It is hardly the
stuff of a nation in need of productivity and growth to create the
vibrantmanufacturing industry that isessential ifweare to increase
employment prospects–and this is sodesperatelyneeded.Even so,
becausewelding is involved in someway in just about allmanufac-
turingprocesses, it isa remarkably robust industryandemployment
is generally pretty stable if not growing at the ratewemight like.
The fortunes of industry reflect in the Institute and althoughwe
expect a toughyear, SAIW isplanning regional expansionwithCape
Town andDurban being the first targets. There is an increasing de-
mand for Institute services inbothcentres.Wehavealready secured
facilities in Cape Town and expect the branch to be operational by
May. There is even greater demand for courses and other services
in KZN so finding a facility in Durban is a high priority – and we
are investigating options. A satellite facility inMpumulanga is also
on the horizon because it will take pressure off the Johannesburg
building, which is working at capacity. These expansions will take
the Institutenearer to the important operationsof itscustomer base.
When we meet at the AGM in May, members will be asked
to support the Council’s intention to convert SAIW from an Unin-
corporated Association to an Incorporated Not for Profit Company
registered under the Companies Act. The Memorandum of Incor-
poration and reasons for the proposed change have been explained
in a communicationwhich accompanied the notice for the AGM to
be held 9
th
May.
Wehope tohaveapackedcalendar of eventswith seminarsand
golf days featuring already. Please don’t forget the YoungWelder of
the Year Competition, which will be held in the last quarter of the
year. It’s still some timeaway, but ifwe identifygood youngwelders
nowwe can start preparing them success. If you need information
on the competition pleasemake contact with Etienne Nell.
By the time this edition of
African Fusion
is published we will
have said goodbye to our President, Professor Madeleine Du Toit,
andshewill havemovedon toWoolongongUniversity. The Institute,
the University of Pretoria and the country has lost an outstanding
professional person who is also charming and approachable. We
hope that the move works out well for her and thank her for the
leadership she has given to the Institute over the last four years.
