CONSTRUCTION WORLD’S
prestigious Best Proj-
ects Awards was held for the 12
th
time at the Royal
Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in Links-
field, Johannesburg on 29 October 2013. Sixty one
entries competed in the seven categories of the awards. The evening was
attendedby 230 guests representing the entire construction industry. Best
Projects is the only award for the South African construction industry that
recognises excellence across the entire South African constructionworld.
The awards are independently judged by specialists who represent
various professional bodies (all were previous presidents of these bodies):
Chartered Institute of Building Africa (Rob Newberry), Master Builders of
South Africa (Naudé Klopper) and Consulting Engineers of South Africa
(Trueman Goba). AfriSam was the main sponsor.
The
Civil Engineering Contractors
category was won by the ‘Tweefon-
tein Optimisation Project’ (WBHO) while ‘Upgrading of National Route 2
Section 11: Coega to Colchester’(Concor Roads & Earthworks) received a
Highly Commended award.‘Refurbishment of IslandViewBerth 2 –Durban
Port’(Stefanutti Stocks Marine) got a Special Mention.
In the
Building Contractors
category ‘Telesure Headquarters Project’
(recently named Auto &General Park) bymain contractor AvengGrinaker-
LTA was awarded a special mention, ‘Alice Lane – Phase I’ (WBHO) was
Highly Commended, while the category was won by ‘Portside’(Murray &
Roberts Western Cape).
The judges remarked that both the Civil Engineering Contractors
and Building Contractors categories were characterised by many ‘firsts’
in the industry.
In the
Civil Engineering and Building Contractors (outside South Africa)
category (sponsored by Performance and Customs Bond Services (PCBS)),
there were two winners: ‘Fairscape’ (Gaborone, Botswana – Stefanutti
Stocks Botswana) was the winner for Building Contractors and the ‘Sen-
delingsdrif Project’ (Namibia) by contractor ADP Marine & Modular was
the winner for Civil Engineering Contractors.
The judges were particularly impressedwith the Specialist Contractors
or Suppliers category as it showed excellent diversity and innovation.
Sponsored by National Asphalt, top honours in this category went to
Draco Demolition for the ‘Munitoria Implosion’. The Highly Commended
award was won by ‘Tarsus Warehouse’(Concrete Laser Flooring) while ‘Sir
Lowry’s Pass Slope Stabilisation’(Maccaferri SA) received a special mention.
The
Professional Services
category was won by SMEC SA for ‘Baia de
Luanda’, Highly Commendedwas ‘Alice Lane – Phase I’(ParagonArchitects),
while Newtown Landscape Architects received a Special Mention for the
‘OR Tambo Narrative & Environmental Education Complex’.
The
Public Private Partnerships
category had two special mentions:
‘AvengGrinaker-LTAKeren KulaDepartment of Environmental Affairs (DEA)
JointVenture’by AvengGrinaker-LTAKeren KulaDEA JV and‘Noblesfontein
Wind Energy and Substation Facility’by Group Five Civil Engineering.
The
AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction
was won
by WBHO for Standard Bank in Rosebank. The ‘FynBloem Protea Packing
Facility’by KUBE Architecture received a Highly Commended award.
