projects in this area,”said Khoza.
Johannes Mampuru, one of the local
subcontractors employed on the project,

THE PROJECT’S COMPLETION
will drasti-
cally reduce the travelling distance between
the town and surrounding areas such as
Randfontein, Krugersdorp, Carletonville and
Ventersdorp. The upgrade project was com-
missioned after sinkholes that collapsed in
close proximity to this road rendered the
route inaccessible.
Aurecon was appointed in 2010 as the
consultant for the dolomitic investigation and
the design of the rehabilitation and upgrade
of the road.TheKPMM/Globul/Civilcon JVwas
appointed by the Gauteng Department of
Roads and Transport as the main contractors
on the project. The Gauteng Department of
Roads andTransport also appointed SANRAL
as the implementing agent on the contract.
Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane,
and the MEC for the Gauteng Department
of Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, officially
unveiled the rehabilitated road on 29 August
2013, handing it over to excited residents.
Ronnie Khoza, head of RSA Offices, who
attended the official opening on behalf of
Aurecon, said:“Aurecon seeks to foster human
achievement in all aspects of our work. It was
a privilege to be involved in a project which
will improve the lives of the local community
through ensuring improved infrastructure
and, through this, enhanced access to eco-
nomic opportunities.”
In addition to improving infrastructure,
the project also involved substantial job
creation as well as skills development.“Local
subcontractors with the required level of
skills were considered in the sourcing of sub-
contractors. In addition, a number of these
contractors received on-the-job-training

tallest double skin building.
Aurecon was engaged to provide
engineering design for mechanical, electri-
cal and plumbing (MEP) services, as well
as façade engineering design with Gensler
Architects and building science services.
Upgraded N14 Merafong

China’s tallest structure
At the time of its topping out in August 2013, the Shanghai Tower was
China’s tallest structure and the centrepiece of the city's skyline.
This involved integrating services design
with environmentally sustainable design
objectives, the structural framework and
varying surface geometry.
To achieve this, we undertook exten-
sive analysis to address the building’s
complex design issues.
Aurecon also undertook extensive
building science, geometric analysis and
wind tunnel testing to address the
building’s complex design issues,
integrating sustainable design
objectives, the structural frame-
work and varying surface geom-
etry. The project’s unique double
layer system combines an inner
façade with a fully unitised curtain
wall with a warped outer surface.
The façade systemdesign achieves
tolerances from -10 millimetre to
+19millimetre from thermal, wind
pressure, seismic load, fabrication
and installation movements.
The tower’s intelligent skin is
setting new benchmarks in tall
building façade design, with the
innovative upward spiral design
reducingwind loads and capturing
rainwater for air-conditioning and
central heating.
