management, through projects and funding available. EThekwini
Electricity realised the effort involved in enabling proper asset man-
agement, and will in future reap the benefits of investing in data
capturing, implementing processes, systems and continuous train-
ing ensuring that through the unequivocal support of management
the journey towards excellence in asset management is successful.
An enterprise asset management system is not just a single
piece of software, but rather a system consisting of multiple parts;
being processes, resources and various technical and non-technical
software applications working in unity to realise asset management.
There is a significant dependence on supporting systems to keep asset

cal engineer. He has a decade of management experience
and is proficient in project management, the development
of software, technical data models, database develop-
ment, asset register compilation, assessment and
specification of GIS enhancement. He has two decades
of electrical engineering experience, having worked on projects in South
Africa and Namibia. Attie is a registered professional engineer with the
ECSA and a member of the SAIEE.

Coert Scherman is a qualified electrical engineer with
management and electrical engineering experience in
the utility information systems domain. This includes
technical data models, database development, asset
register compilation, assessment and specification of
GIS enhancement, information capturing, and transla-
tion and sharing information between technical systems for electrical
utilities. During his career development at the City of Tshwane Electricity
Department, he gained valuable experience and insight into all electrical
infrastructure and an in-depth understanding of the electrical utility busi-
ness, with specific reference to business processes, information systems
and regulatory requirements.

work through an exercise to define what asset data they need for
proper asset management. This should be based on a holistic view
of the assets from where a data attribute ownership mapping can be
done which defines data ownership and responsibility for the various
information systems.
