ABERDARE Cables is gearing up to supply
specialist cable and associated cable acces-
sories in order tomeet the requirements of the
national Integrated Resource Plan (IRP 2010
- 2030) that will provide an additional 9 600MW
of nuclear energy; 6 300MWof coal; 17 800MW
renewables, and 8 900MWof other generation
sources into the national power grid by 2030.
Aberdare’s annuity executive, Siphithi Sibeko,
says the Aberdare product development team
is working on the development of specialist
cable systems designed tomeet the needs of
the overall IRP plan. The company will introduce
eight‘green technologies’for newpower gen-
eration activities that will add some 3 700MW to
the national grid.
The green technologies include onshorewind
(target 1 850MW), concentrating solar power
(CSP) 200MW, solar photovoltaic (PV) 1 450MW,
biomass 12.5MW, biogas 12.5MW, landfill gas
25MW, small scale hydro electric projects 75MW
and other small projects generating 1 to 5MW
to produce a further 100MW.
Aberdare’s SOLARDAC range of lowvoltage
0,9/1,5kV dc cables is designed specifically for
thewiring of PV panels and dc applications
that surpass international tests in compliance
with Aberdare’s specification AB 1574-PV. It is
intended for use in photovoltaic power supply
systems and similar applications, and can be
used in outdoor or indoor fixed installations.
Sibeko adds that SOLARDAC is resistant to UV,
ozone, moisture and chemicals, is halogen-free
and fire retardant.
PV plants aremade up of several modules
that are connected together in solar panel
strings. An inverter converts direct current (dc)
generated by the solar panel into alternating
current (ac) that can be fed into the utility grid
through transmission systems.
SOLARDAC is a single core cable. It consists of
Class 5 tinned stranded copper wires bunched
together to SANS 1411-1with (halogen-free
flame retardant) HFFR polyolefin insulation and
HFFR polyolefin sheathing. The cable is flexible
for mobile and fixed installations. It is suitable
for interconnections of PV panels as well as
frompanels to ac/dc inverters.
Halogen-free and low smoke properties
ensure that it does not propagate flame and is
therefore suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
Gearing up to meet national energy generation projects
Cable sizes range from0.5mm² to 16mm².
The IRP plan for wind generated energy aims
to producemore than 8 000MWof electricity
up to 2030. Aberdare Cables is gearing up to
produceWindac, a specialised range of MV and
LV elastomeric cables.Windac ismanufactured
to the trailing cable specification SANS 1520
Part 1 and Part 2 and flexible cable standard
SANS 1574 (LV) at voltage levels of up to 33kV.
Aberdaremanufactures its own elastomeric
compounds.The company also designs spe-
cialised formulations, cable constructions and
executes special tests that meet the specific
needs of customers.
A complete renewable energy range of stand-
ard and customised lowvoltage andmedium
voltage cableproducts are alsomanufacturedby
Aberdare to suit local conditions, including anti-
theft technology for buried cables calledCable-
Guard.TheVultexMVpower cables are insulated
with cross-linkedpolyethylene (XLPE) offering
tried and testedperformance and reliability.
The LOTOX cable emits little smoke during
combustion, supplementing environmentally-
friendly renewable energy projects. All of the
cables fully comply with the SANS 1339 stand-
ard and are designed for use in solar energy
farms and other renewable energy
generation plants.
To ensure cable security and reduce cable
theft, Aberdare’s CableGuard theft protection
system for underground cable systems virtually
immobilises the cable. A unique cable and
conductor marking systemprovides additional
security for power supplies.

THE DEHNpatch DPA M CAT6 is designed for use
in Category 6 cabling systems. It fulfils the re-
quirements of Category 6 to the ISO/IEC 118001
specification and offers protection to EN 60715
for voltages up to 48V.
DEHNpatch is ideally suited for existing ap-
plications in offices and industry such as Gigabit
Ethernet, ATM or ISDN and Voice over IP and
Power Over Ethernet systems. Thanks to its fully
shielded design, DEHNpatch can be used in
shielded and unshielded networks. The width
corresponds to that of an RJ45 socket outlet,
allowing up to 24 devices to be installed and
integrated in a 19” rack.
The unit is equally suited for use in new instal-
lations or retrofitting into existing installations.
Installation simply involves plugging DEHN-
patch between the patch panel and the active
component (a switch, for example) instead of the
conventional patch cable.
A supporting foot is designed for DIN rail
mounting, and provides safe earthing. For a
single application, a piece of DIN rail with a fixing
device is included as standard. A mounting set
is also available as an accessory where multi-
ple units are mounted in 19” racks. This can be
provided as an accessory. DEHNpatch is supplied
with a standard cable length of 3m, but other
lengths can be provided on request.
DEHN is represented locally by Surgetek.
