POOR quality of power causes physical
damage to equipment, resulting in down-
time and lost productivity – and poor
power quality also increases energy costs,
saysMajorTech’sWerner Grobbelaar.
“However, by usingMajorTech’s K6305
Power Quality Analyser, it is very easy to
set up the instrument, check thewiring
and record the data,”he says.
“Our new rugged compact power
meter offers 3PH four-wire, 3PH three-
wire or single phasemulti-function
measurements, recording and analysing
of power systems.Thismeter can be used
for various wiring systems and canmeas-
ure up to three systems on a single-phase
two-wire circuit. It can be used formeas-
urements of instantaneous, integrated or
demand values.
“This instrument has an automatic
wiring check function to prevent incorrect
connections,”Grobbelaar explains.“The
meter will check the connections and
display the results on the LCD screen.”A
wide selection of clamp sensors allows
measurements from0.1A to 3 000A,”he
says, adding that the instrument auto-
matically recognises the type of clamp
sensor connected to it.
The K6305meter has largememory
capabilities and can store up to 2GB.
Measured data can be saved on a SD card
or the internal memory; and the data can
be transmitted to a PC via USB or Blue-
tooth. Measured data can be checked on
android devices in real-time by using the
Bluetooth function.
“Free Android software – the Kew smart
6305 – is available at theGoogle Play
Store, which supports AndroidVer2.2-3.2,”
explains Grobbelaar.
The K6305 complies with IEC61010-1,
CAT III 600V safety standards and in-
cludes power and energymeasurement
features such as: Voltage (True RMS),
current (True RMS), active power, appar-
ent power, reactive power, active energy,
apparent energy, reactive energy, power
factor (cosθ), frequency, demandmeas-
urement and current flowing on the
neutral line (only on three-phase four-
wiremeasurement).
“MajorTech’s K6305 easy-to-use power
meter effectively helps to locate, predict,
prevent and troubleshoot problems in
power distribution systems and is an
essential instrument for any toolkit,”says
Grobbelaar.

Improved analysis of power quality and energy loss calculations
SCHNEIDER, a global energy management specialist, has secured purchase
orders totalling R101-million from First QuantumMinerals Ltd’s Kansanshi
smelter project and the Sentinel Greenfields project in Zambia. The Kansan-
shi site is located 15kmnorth of the town of Solwezi and the Sentinel site
can be found approximately 150kmwest of the same town.
The scope includes 16 33kV F400 panels, 26 33kV DFN7 panels, 169
MCSet panels as well as 27 Motorpact panels and 35 Altivar 1200 medium
voltage variable speed drives.
Schneider Electric South Africa, in strong collaboration with Schneider
Electric Australia, provided detailed and comprehensive medium voltage
electrical solutions with the emphasis on competitive pricing andmeeting
the project delivery time expectations.
In addition, Schneider Electric’s focus on safety and reliability is key to the
sustainable mining operations required by First QuantumMinerals Ltd in
