In abiding with this vision, Eaton Corpora-
tion recently announced the availability of the
Eaton 9PX/9SX uninterruptible power supply
(UPS), the next generation of energy efficient
5 to 11kVA future-proof UPSs for virtualised
environments.
For IT and facilities managers who are tar-
geted with managing rising energy costs and
consumption, the 9PX offers the ideal power
protection solution due to its unmatched
power density and power usage effectiveness
(PUE). The unit feature up to 95% efficiency in
online double conversion mode, and 98% in
high efficiency mode, with a power factor of
0.9, enabling them to deliver 28% more power
than other UPSs in the same class.
As a result, the 9PX/9SX is particularly
suitable for users looking to protect their
equipment in computer rooms and small data
centres as well as in industrial, manufacturing
and medical applications.
The devices come as a compact rack or tower
delivering up to 5 400W in a 3U form factor and
10kW in 6U. To allow for enhancedmanageabili-
ty, a sophisticated graphical LCD display provides
clear information on the UPSs full status and
analytics as well as configuration capabilities.
The multilingual screen also tilts 45° for ease of
viewing and its position can be adjusted to suit
rack or tower use. In double conversion topology,
the UPS constantly monitors power conditions
for optimised capacity management and regu-
lates voltage and frequency. Users have the op-
tion tomonitor energy consumption via the LCD
or through Eaton’s Intelligent Power Software
Suite, which is compatible with all major operat-
ing systems and virtualisation software.

EATON’S electrical business is a global leader in
power distribution, power quality, control and
automation, power monitoring, and energy
management products and services.
Eaton is positioned, through its global electri-
cal product series and solutions to answer
today’s most critical electrical power
management challenges.
Maximising energy efficiency, reliability and performance
for virtual environments
THE first photovoltaic (PV) solar panel
manufacturing plant in KwaZulu-Natal has
recently been established in
NewGermany.
ART Solar – the only South African-owned
PVmanufacturer – specialises in themanu-
facture of solar PVmodules for the sustain-
able generation of electrical power.
The company is set to play a significant
role in renewable energy – initially in South
Africa, followed by the sub-Saharanmarket
and the African continent.
“ART Solar uses the latest PV technol-
ogy to convert solar energy to electricity.
By utilising this environmentally-friendly
technology to generate electrical
power, the company provides long-term
solutions to the current and predicted
electricity issues facing South Africa,”
says Dr Ronald Lange, chief operating of-
ficer for ART Solar. “PV modules – which
use daylight to generate electricity – are
gaining popularity globally as a form of
renewable energy that is clean, emission
and noise-free, sustainable, safe and cost
efficient.

turing plant in KwaZulu-Natal recently started
producing PV modules.

THE Artisan andTechnical Faculty of the Eskom
Academy of Learning in Midrand, Johannesburg,
has certified its first 33 building energy auditors
after having successfully completed the rigorous
year-long Building Energy Auditors Training
programme (BEAT).
The technicians received their Skills Pro-
gramme Certificates from the ESETA (Energy
Sector Education andTraining Authority) at a
graduation ceremony recently.
The graduates hail from Soweto, Tembisa, Al-
exandra, Katlehong, Johannesburg and Pretoria,
and are now fully equipped to conduct energy
audits on buildings and provide competent ad-
vice to customers on energy efficient technolo-
gies, processes and systems.
“We are very proud of our recent graduates.
They have worked exceptionally hard to gain this
qualification and we wish them every success.
By extending training and development pro-
grammes such as these, we can kick start a skills
revolution which will ensure the continual inte-
gration of cutting edge expertise and knowledge
in support of Eskom’s strategic commitment to
assist customers in their efforts to replace energy
intensive technologies with energy efficient
solutions,”says Andrew Etzinger, senior general
manager, Integrated Demand Management
department, Eskom.
Eskom’s range of energy efficiency rebate pro-
grammes encourage a collective switch to new
technologies, solutions, processes and systems
in businesses across South Africa, irrespective
of size or type. Developed as the foundation for
a business-to-business partnership, the rebate
programmes support energy efficiency projects
capable of achieving annual electricity savings
ranging from 2MWh to 30GWh sustainable over
a period of three years.
The programmes include the Standard Prod-
uct, Standard Offer, ESCo Model and Perform-
ance Contracting. Conducting energy audits on
buildings and providing competent advice to
customers play a crucial role in energy efficiency
projects in the commercial, industrial and agricul-
tural sectors funded by Eskom. Visit
for detailed information
on Eskom’s rebate programmes.

Thus, the 9PX/9SX easily integrates with virtual-
ised IT environments such as VMware vCenter,
Microsoft HyperV, Citrix XEN and Red Hat KVM.
Connectivity options are broad and include
USB, Serial and Relay as well as a slot for an
optional network card.
To ensure service continuity, in the unlikely
event of issues with internal electronics for
example, Eaton has equipped the 9PX/9SX
with redundant components as well as with
an internal self-powered bypass. On HotSwap
models, a maintenance bypass is also available
for easy replacement of the UPS without power-
ing down critical systems. The 9PX device allows
for parallel operation so that users can either
build a redundant solution or scale up their UPS
systemusing HotSync technology to double
the power at a later point in time depending on
their infrastructure growth.
The 5 and 6kVAmodels feature load segment
control, which enables prioritised shutdowns of
non-essential equipment tomaximise battery
runtime for critical devices.
Eaton’s Advanced Battery Management (ABM)
technology includes a three-stage intelligent
charging process that optimises recharge time,
eliminates overcharging and continuously
monitors battery condition. Thanks to ABM,
battery service life can be extended by up to
50%. Furthermore, users can increase runtime
by adding up to 12 external hot-swappable
battery modules. As a result, the system can
provide power for several hours if necessary. All
Eaton 9PX/9SX UPS units come with a two-year
warranty covering the entire unit including
batteries.

“These modules are easy to install and
require nomaintenance, apart fromoc-
casional cleaning. Other important features
are the 25-year guarantee offered by ART
Solar and an estimated 40-year lifetime
of the module. The company also offers
a technical advisory and support service
throughout the country.
“Customers value the flexibility of our
highly skilled team that designs and pro-
duces modules according to exact require-
ments. Important factors also include local
content, black economic empowerment
and enhanced aesthetics of these modules.”
The company has made a significant
investment in the latest equipment from
Swiss equipment manufacturer – Meyer
Burger Swiss Solar Systems – and benefits
from shared technology with global PV
specialists.
PVmodules, which adhere to stringent
International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) specifications, are certified at ART
Solar by the leading and independent test
institute TüV Rheinland in Germany.
