THE electricity used over the lifetime of a single incan-
descent bulb, costs anywhere between five and 10 times
the original purchase price of the lamp itself, says Jacques
Coetzee, internal technical specialist at AC/DC Dynamics.
“Today, light emitting diode (LED) lamps have revolu-
tionised energy-efficient lighting,”he says.
“LEDs are small, efficient, solid state lamps and, with the
rapid advancements in LED technology over the past few
years, there are many new lamp styles now available,”he
explains, adding that all of these LEDs are available with
standard bases, which fit common household
light fixtures.
“LEDs are the next generation in home lighting and
one of the reasons for this is that LEDs provide more
value since the life span of the lamp is much longer than
standard CFLs.
“One of the problems associated with the first generation
LED lamps was the glare they produced, however, this has
been overcome by an intelligent lens design.
“The KL range of lamps available fromAC/DC Dynamics
and all their distribution points, uses a specially designed
lens that eliminates glare and provides even light distri-
bution. The innovative design of the lenses alsomakes it
possible to project light all around the lamp, providing the
same effect as the old incandescent lamps,”says Coetzee.
“For example, a chandelier can now be retrofitted with
LED candle lamps that will provide the required lighting
effect without spoiling the aesthetic appeal of the
installation.”
About 25% of the average home’s energy budget can be
attributed to lighting so, when choosing a light bulb, it is
best to keep the following inmind:
Estimate the desired brightness (lumen). The
lamp brightness (lumen) is stated on the packag-
ing, therefore choose a lamp that is the equiva-
lent of the traditional lamp being replaced. For
example, when replacing a 50W halogen down-
light, choose an LEDdownlight with a lumen out-
put of about 500lm.
Choose between‘warm’and‘cool’light – the new
LED bulbs are available in‘cool’white light, which
is ideal for task lighting, and ‘warm’ light com-
monly used for accent or small area lighting.
Choose the required lamp type – select the type
of lamp required (downlight, candle, etc) and the
base type (screw-in, bayonet, two-pin, etc).
Choose between standard and dimmable
bulbs. Some LED bulbs are now available as
dimmable bulbs.
