The purpose of a Mechanical Design Engineer is to design, develop, and improve mechanical components, systems, or products by applying engineering principles and technical knowledge.

This position reports to: Head Design – Mechanical Engineering

Main Responsibilities:

  • Specify, design, develop and evaluate precision mechanical and electro-mechanical products, subsystems or components.
  • Participate in failure diagnostics processes as required for customer and product support.
  • Detailed analysis of test results and where necessary failure analysis to initiate corrective actions.
  • Systematic analysis of the performance of equipment, subsystems and products.
  • Applying best practice methods and procedures for testing mechanical components or sub-systems.
  • General understanding of the manufacturing and production processes.
  • Application of measurement uncertainty calculations where appropriate or required.
  • Establish best methods, practices and processes required to achieve the required reproducibility and repeatability in manufacturing CBI products.
  • Responsible for regular maintenance and technical audit inspections of equipment and facilities used in the department.

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric/ Grade 12
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field).
  • 3-year experience in a similar product development environment
  • Thorough knowledge of product development procedures and methodologies (an added advantage)
  • Develop or support software in one or more of the industry standard software languages.
  • Knowledgeable in the safe use of mechanical and/or electrical equipment or systems (an advantage)
  • Familiar with the principles and discipline of project management (an advantage)

Competencies

  • Mechanical Design: Proficiency in creating 2D/3D models using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo).
  • Engineering Analysis: Ability to perform stress, thermal, fluid flow, and tolerance analysis (FEA/CFD).
  • Product Development: Knowledge of prototyping, testing, and validation processes.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Understanding of machining, fabrication, casting, molding, and additive manufacturing.
  • Materials Engineering, Selection and application of appropriate materials for performance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Standards & Compliance: Familiarity with ISO, ASME, OSHA, and other relevant industry stand
