Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company (ROMPCO) is proud to announce its participation as a key sponsor at the 11thMozambique Mining and Energy Conference (MMEC 2025), taking place from 7 to 8 May 2025 at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre in Maputo. As a strategic stakeholder in Southern Africa’s energy landscape, ROMPCO is leveraging its presence at the event to underscore its commitment to innovation, sustainable development, and regional energy integration.

Mlandzeni Boyce CEO at ROMPCO“MMEC 2025 provides a critical opportunity for ROMPCO to highlight our technological advancements in gas transportation, our environmentally conscious operations, and our collaborative efforts to stimulate local industry and economic growth,” says CEO Mlandzeni Boyce.

Mozambique has the largest natural gas reserves in sub-Saharan Africa, and the country is looking to use gas to transition to cleaner energy, which is where ROMPCO stands to play a pivotal role. “We have been transporting gas in Mozambique for 20 years,” notes Boyce.

As part of its broader strategic vision, ROMPCO’s participation aligns with its commitment to enhancing Mozambique’s energy infrastructure and contributing to a balanced energy economy. “Mozambique is a key market for our operations,” says Boyce. “By engaging with policymakers, investors, and industry leaders, we aim to deepen our involvement and foster impactful dialogue that supports long-term energy security and industrialisation.”

One of the major challenges ROMPCO currently faces is the anticipated decline in gas supply from the Pande and Temane gas fields. Boyce emphasises the importance of timely investment decisions: “Delays in final investment decisions on LNG infrastructure could impact our ability to meet future demand. We are working closely with LNG developers to identify solutions that ensure a reliable gas supply for our customers.”

As a long-standing transporter of natural gas in Mozambique, ROMPCO plays a pivotal role in the nation’s transition to cleaner energy. The company is currently exploring the transport of regasified liquefied natural gas (R-LNG) through its existing pipeline network and investigating ways to extend supply to remote markets. “Natural gas is a critical bridge in the shift away from higher-emission fuels,” notes Boyce.

ROMPCO views Mozambique’s current energy investment climate as promising, bolstered by recent developments like the launch of the National Petrochemical City in Vilankulos. “These milestones affirm the potential for strategic partnerships and infrastructure growth,” says Boyce. “A stable regulatory environment and effective collaboration between government and the private sector remain key to unlocking this potential.”

In support of sustainable growth, ROMPCO is implementing advanced pipeline monitoring systems and conducting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) baseline studies. “We are committed to leveraging innovation to improve operational efficiency and reduce our environmental footprint,” says Boyce. “As customer needs evolve, we are continuously exploring new technologies and market opportunities.”

ROMPCO anticipates significant transformation in Mozambique’s energy sector over the next decade, with gas-to-power (GtP) projects leading the way. To meet rising demand, the company is evaluating pipeline expansion projects to increase capacity from 212 to 400 petajoules per year. These efforts aim to support industrial growth and promote regional energy integration.

In keeping with the MMEC 2025 theme of ‘Investing in a New Era: Transforming Mozambique’s Natural Resources to Spur Industrialisation and Regional Integration’, ROMPCO plans to actively engage stakeholders across the gas value chain. “Our mission is to deliver safe, reliable, and environmentally sound gas transportation solutions. Our participation at MMEC reflects our long-standing commitment to Mozambique’s energy future,” says Boyce.

Overall, ROMPCO envisions Mozambique’s energy sector evolving towards a more sustainable and integrated system, with natural gas serving as a crucial bridge in the transition to renewable energy sources. “We want to be a leader in this change by ensuring the transportation of natural gas and supporting the efforts that will lead to industrialisation and economic development.”

Boyce highlights ROMPCO’s mission to increase stakeholder value by increasing its presence in a way that ensures safe, reliable and environment-friendly operations. “Our participation in MMEC 2025 is an indication of our commitment to develop a balanced energy economy, gas infrastructure and capabilities, and corporate social responsibility. Our sponsorship of MMEC 2025 is a clear indication of our commitment to growing the energy sector in Mozambique and the region at large,” he concludes.
