Daimler Truck Southern Africa (DTSA), together with its retail dealership, Sandown Motors Commercial Vehicles Centurion, has made a meaningful contribution to Sinethemba High School in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, reinforcing its commitment to education and community development.

Located in a region that holds special significance for the company, the school serves a vibrant community despite facing ongoing resource and infrastructure challenges. The Eastern Cape is home to DTSA’s vehicle assembly plant and many of its employees, making investment in the surrounding communities a natural extension of the company’s corporate citizenship efforts.
DTSA’s relationship with the school began during its 2024 Mandela Day initiative, undertaken in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation. During the visit, the company gained first-hand insight into the school’s needs and committed to returning with additional support. That commitment was later strengthened when Sandown Motors Commercial Vehicles Centurion joined the initiative, enabling a broader and more impactful intervention.
Recognising education as a critical driver of sustainable development and opportunity, the DTSA Group of Companies undertook several upgrades aimed at improving the learning environment. The project included the renovation of classrooms and the school library, while the donation of computers helped complete the school's computer laboratory, giving learners improved access to digital learning resources and technology.
The initiative was implemented in partnership with the Gift of the Givers Foundation, one of Africa’s largest humanitarian and disaster-response organisations. Established in 1992, the foundation is renowned for its rapid response to crises and its extensive community development programmes both locally and internationally. Its involvement helped ensure the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of the project.
“Education remains a key pillar of our Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, and having the opportunity to make a lasting impact in a community that is both vital to our operations and home to many of our employees is truly meaningful and close to our hearts,” says Maretha Gerber, President and Group CEO of Daimler Truck Southern Africa.
“The need for educational support, resources and adequate infrastructure in South Africa remains immense, and we are proud to play our part in driving meaningful and sustainable change. Every learner deserves a fair chance to succeed. Our work at Sinethemba High School is not done, and we hope to return to continue this journey and help build an environment where learners are supported, inspired and equipped to shape their futures.”
Mark Croxon, CEO of Sandown Commercial Vehicles Centurion, says the dealership immediately recognised the value of becoming involved in the project.
“When we first learned about the Sinethemba High School project, we knew immediately that we wanted to be part of it. Our trucks help keep Africa moving, and they are assembled in the Eastern Cape. Supporting this community therefore felt both natural and necessary. We are immensely proud to contribute to this initiative and look forward to continuing our support as the project progresses,” he says.
DTSA has expressed its appreciation to the Gift of the Givers Foundation for its partnership and the critical role it played in bringing the project to life.
Through initiatives such as these, DTSA continues to demonstrate its commitment to creating meaningful, long-term impact in the communities connected to its operations. The upgraded facilities at Sinethemba High School are expected to provide learners and educators with improved opportunities for growth, learning and future success.
