Electricity and Control May Mailblaze cover webIn this May issue of Electricity + Control we feature Control systems + automation, Drives, motors + switchgear, Sensors + switches, and Plant maintenance, test + measurement – all interrelated aspects in the demanding day-to-day operations of industry.

Looking at Control systems + automation, Leigh Darroll spoke to Paul Deppe and Thami Mzolo at FUCHS LUBRICANTS South Africa about the advanced automation systems the company has introduced in its expanded production facilities – and the benefits automation brings in optimising its performance and boosting output.

Adrian van Wyk of Referro Systems outlines what he sees as key trends and new opportunities for 2025, anticipating a strong swing to new technologies in automation, instrumentation and more, in the industries Referro serves, specifically, mining and agriculture.

Kobus Vermeulen of Schneider Electric highlights the value of control systems to manage efficiencies and optimise the use of turbomachinery in industrial plants.

Drives, motors and switchgear are used across all industries. CWIEME Berlin is the coil winding, insulation and electrical manufacturing exhibition, scheduled for 3 to 5 June this year. Ahead of the event, Nicola Acampora of the Hyve Group, explored the best options for keeping motors cool in different applications.

Rodrigo Cetenareski of WEG Africa notes the implementation of the Minimum Energy Performance Standard for low voltage motors in South Africa – and outlines the benefits of energy and cost savings that the prescribed minimum IE3 rated motors deliver.

As a leader in the field of Sensors and switches, ifm shares various application cases that demonstrate the advantages and versatility of its non-contact radar level sensors, especially in sectors where hygiene is a priority.

In Plant maintenance, test + measurement, Robert Erasmus of Sanitech reports how Gqeberha-based San Miguel, a leading producer of lemon oils, juices and related products, has adopted advanced wastewater treatment systems to achieve its water conservation and reuse goals as part of its commitment to sustainability.

Turning to the petrochemical and oil & gas sectors, Jurie Erasmus of ACTOM emphasises how the tough operating conditions in these environments constantly challenge the integrity of equipment, making consistent, proactive maintenance critical to support continuing operational efficiency.

And there is always more to learn in our regular columns on Cybersecurity: Strengthening cyber resilience in the public sector, Engineering the future: Sodium-ion – the next step in battery technology, Reskilling, upskilling + training: Integrating emotional intelligence into QCTO skills programmes, and Write @ the back: Aquifer maps to boost water supply.
