An MC Series Helical Bevel Industrial Gear Unit was installed recently by SEW-EURODRIVE at a manufacturing plant where the transmission system had malfunctioned. In addition to providing a higher performance with reduced power consumption, the MC Series gear unit saw the plant returned to operation within days and with substantial cost savings for the customer.

Downtime in a manufacturing plant is costly. A quick recovery from mechanical breakdown to full manufacturing capacity is a priority that SEW-EURODRIVE, a leader in the supply of industrial gear units (IG units), understands. Following an assessment of the breakdown, it was able to restore the rotary cooking pot to full operation within a week.

The new MC Series helical bevel IG unit and motor were installed to return the animal feed manufacturing plant to operation.

The company’s Durban branch examined the rotary cooking pot at an animal feed plant. Commenting on the inspection, Sales Representative, Cliffton Bridge said it was a fairly old rotary pot that had suffered a transmission failure. “The inspection showed that our SEW-EURODRIVE MC Series Helical Bevel IG Unit would be the perfect replacement solution, and that we could do a drop and install process that would reduce downtime.”

Bridge added: “As solution specialists, we understand the need for a quick return to operations. The MC Series Helical Bevel IG Unit, which replaced the old worm styled gearing unit, is more compact due its modular design and has fewer variables. The helical bevel system also has increased torque capacity, broader gear range ratios and delivers higher efficiency. Another advantage is that the motor connects directly to the gearbox.

“Compared to the cost of repairing the old gearbox, the installation of the new IG unit delivered a cost saving of more than 26%. In addition to installation and commissioning within seven days, the unit offers an improved operating power of 55 kW down to 37 kW and a mechanical efficiency of 95%.”

For this application the MC Series Helical Bevel IG Unit has an ac motor. The input shaft has a depth and length of 50 x 100 mm and the output shaft a depth and length of 130 x 220 mm. The left and right shaft positons are enabled through a single housing. The motor power is a nominal PM (kW) 37.00, with an input speed of n1(rpm) 1475.

The main benefits of the MC Series include:

  • Wide range in torque
  • Extensive gear ratios available
  • Robust unit due to monoblock housing
  • Leakage free capabilities with optional ‘drywell’ version
  • Suitable for horizontal, vertical and upright mounting
  • Locally assembled by SEW South Africa
  • Quick and efficient technical support.

The MC Series features the SEW-EURODRIVE Extended Bearing Distance (EBD) concept which offers stronger bearings within the gear unit. This means in many cases separate bearings are no longer required in the agitator or an oversizing of the gear unit can be avoided. The concept is supplemented by an optional drywell seal, which prevents oil leakage at the output shaft.

“As a key solutions provider to the engineering industry, we believe our efficient and modular solutions offer valuable savings and demonstrate the benefits of using the latest available technology. SEW-EURODRIVE is well known for its technical excellence across all sectors of industry. Our aim is to add value to our customers and offer them peace of mind through our local support,” said Clive O’Reilly, SEW-EURODRIVE Durban Branch Manager.
