Enel Green Power, the Enel Group subsidiary focused on the development and management of renewable energy plants worldwide, and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), through their jointly controlled entity, Enel Green Power RSA (EGP RSA), have concluded three long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa (Air Liquide) and Sasol South Africa (Sasol).The PPA will see the supply 330 MW of renewable energy to Sasol’s Secunda site, where Air Liquide operates the world’s largest oxygen production facility.
This step makes Enel Green Power RSA one of the first renewable energy companies to conclude a set of large-scale wind energy PPAs in South Africa for the commercial and industrial (C&I) market.
The power will be generated by three joint venture- (JV) owned wind projects located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and planned to be operational by 2026. This 330 MW cluster complements the existing platform of over 730 MW that Enel Green Power RSA already has in operation and is expected to result in an annual production of more than 1 100 GWh.
The announcement also marks the first project developed entirely under the umbrella of the JV between Enel Green Power and QIA since the two entities formed a partnership to build and operate renewable energy plants in sub-Saharan Africa. The partnership is aligned with QIA’s commitment to support the global transition to a low-carbon future and strengthens Enel Green Power as a major renewable energy supplier in South Africa. Discussions with other potential off-takers are continuing with a view to increasing energy capacity further, a move that will reinforce its position as a leader in the renewable energy industry.
