It has been yet another successful year for Royal HaskoningDHV on the awards front. The Level 1 B-BBEE engineering consultancy has scooped accolades in some of the country’s most prestigious built environment awards evenings. Winning projects include the Grayston Pedestrian Bridge, the doubling of the Tugela Ferry River Bridge, the construction of a new 12,5 megalitre reservoir at the old George water treatment and the Sonskynvallei Phase 2 Housing Project.
At the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) Southern Cape Regional Awards held last week in George, Royal HaskoningDHV won the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award for the Sonskynvallei Phase 2 Housing Project. The company was commissioned by Mossel Bay Municipality for the design, tender and construction monitoring stages of the project. The project is an example of a successful integrated development, with quality infrastructure that was established and that can be utilised by the community for decades to come.
The company also won an award for the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement: Institutional and Structural Engineering Project, for the construction of a new 12,5 megalitre reservoir at the old George water treatment works. George Municipality’s new reservoir provides storage of potable water mainly to the indigent communities of Thembalethu and Pacaltsdorp. The project is an example of excellent innovation and high-quality infrastructure, in an extremely challenging and restricted area. It is a success story of achievement through teamwork between the client, engineer and the contractor, while the supply to the community could not be interrupted.
In July the company won the SAICE Pietermaritzburg Regional Award in the Technical Excellence Category for the doubling of the Tugela River Bridge in the rural village of Tugela Ferry. The town, located in central Kwa-Zulu Natal, is one of the most impoverished in the Country. The town’s growth potential was being constricted by an old single lane steel girder bridge dating back to the 1930’s. The new bridge is vital to the prosperity of the town and was commissioned by the Kwa-Zulu Department of Transport to boost the local economy and improve mobility through the area.
Earlier this year at the SAICE JHB Regional Awards, the Grayston Pedestrian Bridge received 4 awards. It was awarded the Most Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement – Community Based Category. It was also awarded the Most Outstanding Project in the Transport Engineering Category. It came 2nd in the Technical Excellence Category and 3rd in the Most Outstanding Project in the Structural Engineering Category. The bridge has also received a Commendation in the Projects with a value between R50-million and R250-million at the 2018 CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards on 15th August. The Grayston Pedestrian Bridge forms part of a major pedestrian and cycling corridor built to connect residents of Alexandra Township to Sandton in Johannesburg, across a very busy N1 Highway.
