IDC Technologies is hosting the High Voltage & Earthing Engineering Conference in Sandton, Johannesburg on 22 and 23 October, presenting real-world applications that engineers can apply directly to current projects and to upgrade ageing infrastructure to meet modern safety and performance standards; solutions to reduce downtime, extend life, cut costs and build  resilient, sustainable infrastructure.

High Voltage Earthing Engineering Conference

The conference comes as South Africa aims to invest substantially in strengthening and extending its transmission and distribution networks

The event will take place at the Protea Hotel by Marriott, the Balalaika, and is designed for personnel working with high to medium voltage systems in national and municipal utilities, grid and plant operators, independent power producers, transmission and distribution (T&D) systems, as well as project developers, EPC contractors, decision makers in mining, steel and heavy industry, oil and gas, energy regulators, safety inspectors, engineering consultants, electricians and technicians.

It offers a non-commercial platform where technical expertise, innovative solutions, and the latest research shaping South Africa’s high voltage and earthing engineering landscape will be shared. The programme will include practical case studies and panel discussions led by industry experts. It features a lineup of locally and internationally recognised speakers.

  • Chris Yelland, Managing Director of EE Business Intelligence, will present the opening keynote on: ’The State of the Electrical Supply & Distribution Industries in South Africa’ and moderate a panel discussion.
  • Dr Bill Carman, Principal Consultant at Safearth UK, will deliver an international keynote on the topic: ’Inside the modern earthing system testing toolbox – What’s essential today?’ and will host a workshop on ’The Evolution of MV Distribution Earthing System Design – Where to next?’

Other expert speakers from industry and academia, include:

  • Dr Daniel Obaleye, Senior Management Consultant at SystemicLogic Group
  • Professor Chandima Gomes from the University of the Witwatersrand
  • Thuthukani Nduduzo Biyela, Managing Director of Siphulathuthu Engineering Services
  • Marco Ehrig, Senior Technical Sales Consultant at Siemens Energy
  • Steven S Mvuyana, Unit Manager at Sebenzana Consulting
  • Louis Blom, Commercial Manager at Cargill Bioindustrial Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Brandon Poonah, Electrical Engineer at Zutari
  • Pieter Gabriel Hendrik Colyn, Director and Head of The Mine & Occupation at ENS.

The conference is supported by EE Business Intelligence, the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE), and the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT).

Delegates attending can earn CPD professional development points accredited by the SAIEE, and all delegates will receive a certificate of attendance from IDC Technologies.

Chris Yelland (CEng) comments: "This conference comes at the right time and place, on the eve of massive investments and engineering opportunities in South Africa in transmission and distribution systems, lines, substations, transformers, switchgear and associated equipment, estimated to amount to about R350 billion over the next 10 years, as the Eskom Transmission Development Plan takes shape."
