Electric motors are crucial in maintaining optimal productivity across mining plants. However, a significant issue is that many of these motors are not optimised for maximum efficiency.
Graeme Neilson, Business Unit Manager for Electric Motors at BMG, highlights the problem, stating, “It is estimated that almost two-thirds of the power consumed by the mining sector is associated with electric motors, particularly those used for pumps, fans, and conveyors. This is a concern for the mining sector, especially as the country’s power crisis deepens.”
BMG collaborates closely with customers to ensure continuous operation and high productivity in challenging mining conditions. Their team of designers and engineers, working with global specialists, have developed the Synergy IE3 electric motors, setting local benchmarks for high-efficiency motors in demanding environments.
These Synergy IE3 motors boast critical energy-saving features and numerous advantages over other electric motors, including lower operational costs, suitability for voltage variation applications, reduced temperature rise, and minimal maintenance requirements. They also offer greater reliability, reduced noise and vibration levels, enhanced flexibility, and extended service life.
Designed specifically for Africa’s harsh mining conditions, the Synergy IE3 motors include standard features such as IP66 protection against dust and water ingress and Class H insulation, with a Class B temperature rise. These motors are most efficient when running between 75% and 100% of full load, with rated voltages of 400 V and 525 V and a rated frequency of 50 Hz. Their efficiency and power factor values make them cost-effective, with a return on investment of between three and five years.
An electronic soft starter ensures efficient control of starting parameters like current and voltage, while a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) allows for optimal energy consumption by enabling the motor to operate efficiently at varying speeds. These motors are surface-treated for extended service life and offer installation flexibility with integrated and removable feet.
For continuous monitoring, BMG recommends installing an SPM bearing monitoring device. Synergy has also developed robust aluminium housing motors with cast iron end shields for frame sizes from 56 to 180, which offer a sturdy structure and reduced noise.
BMG provides a full range of Synergy IE3 motors ex-stock and can supply IE4 and IE5 units to meet specific mining requirements. Their standard Synergy 3-phase asynchronous cast iron motors incorporate the latest technology and are used across various industries, including mining, metallurgy, pumps and water treatment, petroleum, chemical, cement, and sugar and paper milling. BMG’s electromechanical team offers technical advisory and support services throughout Southern Africa.
