Street lighting is an essential component of urban infrastructure, providing safety and security for residents after sunset.

Traditional street lighting systems, which have been in use for many years, primarily rely on fixed, often high-intensity single-colour light (typically amber or white). However, the advent of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), now the preferred technology for street lighting, has introduced more flexible solutions, including options to adjust brightness (dimming) and colour temperature (CCT).
In South Africa, the dimming of street lights remains a topic of debate due to the country’s security concerns, despite the significant energy savings that dimming offers. Changing the colour appearance—such as shifting between cool white and warm white—is a well-established concept in indoor lighting, known as ‘Tunable White’. However, Tunable White is a relatively new concept in street lighting.
The dynamic adaptation of light colour allows the illumination of entire streets and cities to align with the natural circadian rhythm. Warm-white, dimmed light is ideal for early morning and late evening, helping to mitigate the effects of light pollution in urban areas.
Away from busy streets and pathways, smart ambient light control can further reduce light pollution and its detrimental effects on nature and wildlife. Dynamic adjustments to warmer colour temperatures during quieter periods lessen the impact of artificial light on the environment.
The new Tridonic multichannel LED drivers enable users to create high-quality outdoor lighting solutions for various applications. These LED drivers provide superior dynamic outdoor lighting with Tunable White (DT8-Tc) or dynamic light distribution (DT6) from a single driver. The multichannel LED drivers combine the features of two drivers into one, offering increased functionality at a lower cost, while requiring less space and reducing complexity. Variable zone lighting and dynamic lighting now help to improve the environmental impact of night-time lighting, while also reducing energy consumption through on-demand lighting.
