The expansion of Calling Academy Stellenbosch, a non-profit school in South Africa, demonstrates the transformative power of innovative lighting and sustainable design in educational architecture. Designed by Cape Town-based SALT Architects, the project uses cost-effective yet impactful lighting solutions to create an inspiring learning environment for low-income learners.

A key feature of the 850-square-metre expansion is its strategic use of natural and artificial lighting to enhance functionality and aesthetics. Polycarbonate roof tiles allow soft, diffused natural light to flood classrooms and communal areas, reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day. This not only creates a welcoming atmosphere but also lowers energy consumption, aligning with the project’s commitment to sustainability.
Complementing the natural light, Spazio fittings, installed with precision based on LED Lighting SA’s simulations, provide optimal illumination for evening use and overcast days. The fittings ensure that every space—from classrooms to the multi-functional assembly hall—is evenly lit, fostering an environment conducive to learning and collaboration.
Beyond the classrooms, the lighting design extends to outdoor terraces and courtyards. These spaces are illuminated to encourage social interaction and provide safe, accessible areas for learners to gather after dark. Thoughtfully placed openings in the eastern façade introduce additional natural light into the foyer, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces while reinforcing the school’s connection to its environment.
Cost-effectiveness was a guiding principle throughout the project. By repurposing materials such as sanitary ware donated from office renovations and incorporating locally sourced components, the design achieves high-quality results on a limited budget. The focus on lighting, in particular, highlights how strategic design choices can elevate spaces while maintaining affordability.
This expansion, which also includes classrooms, a laboratory, and administrative areas, underscores the mission of Calling Education: to offer world-class, affordable education to underserved communities. With its emphasis on lighting innovation and sustainability, the project sets a benchmark for future educational developments, proving that resourceful design can illuminate pathways to opportunity and achievement.
