Equipment manufacturer Astec Industries has officially kicked off its long-term commitment to giving back with the launch of a series of Socio-Economic Development (SED) projects aimed at uplifting and empowering vulnerable communities and supporting those in need.

Astec launches SED projects to empower the vulnerable and destitute

Astec’s SED programme was launched at The Manger Care Centre in Benoni, Gauteng. This non-profit organisation provides shelter, care and life changing opportunities to vulnerable and destitute individuals. “Astec employees came together to donate supplies and lend their hands (and hearts) to the centre,” reports Astec HR head Michelle Norris.

“The Manger Care Centre is doing exceptional work in restoring dignity and hope. We are proud to support them as they continue changing lives,” she added.

Astec’s project included donating food and essential plumbing supplies such as taps, pipes and showerheads. The team also painted and refurbished two newly built wooden homes. “Our initial plan was to improve one of the homes, but we were able to double our impact due to overwhelming support from the Astec team,” Norris says.

She notes that this impactful launch of Astec’s SED programme is just the beginning. The organisation has identified numerous other beneficiaries to help, including Siyabonga Children's Home in Germiston, Amadea House in Hestea Park, Pretoria, The Tshisusu Foundation (Sinethamba Hope House) in Benoni, Kids Haven in Benoni, Resthaven Ministries in Townsview, Johannesburg, and Jacaranda Care Centre in Pretoria North

The planned projects range from painting and refurbishments to clothing drives and infrastructure improvements.

“Each organisation plays a vital role in its community, and Astec is proud to support their missions through action, not just words,” Norris concludes.
