JSE-listed Sibanye-Stillwater has announced the conclusion of a flexible renewable energy power purchase agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy, a licensed energy trader.

Sibanye Stillwater increases its renewable energy portfolio by securing an additional 220MW power purchase agreement

Etana Energy will supply Sibanye-Stillwater’s SA operations with approximately 220 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity from a diversified portfolio of solar and wind generation projects for a period of 10 years, further positioning Sibanye-Stillwater as South Africa’s largest offtaker in the SA mining industry and the second largest private offtaker of renewable energy in the country.

This additional 220 MW supply increases the Group's total renewable energy capacity under development from 407 MW at the end of 2025 to approximately 627 MW, delivering on the Group’s strategic target of 600 MW from renewable energy sources, enabling both decarbonisation and long-term electricity cost savings of 20%-30% per annum relative to current Eskom utility rates.

The PPA with Etana Energy followed a competitive tender process to secure additional renewable energy on flexible commercial terms, considering the life-of-mine profile and energy requirements of the Group's SA operations. This agreement is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 648,000 tCO₂e*. Electricity will be delivered through the national transmission network utilising wheeling.

Cumulatively, from 2028, Sibanye-Stillwater's renewable energy portfolio is expected to generate 2.036 terawatt-hours (TWh) of clean energy annually, translating to a 2.198 mtCO₂e* reduction in scope 2 emissions per year.

Sibanye-Stillwater CEO, Richard Stewart, commented, “Our agreement with Etana Energy adds a material 220MW equivalent to over 35% of our renewable energy target and takes us closer towards our 2040 carbon neutral goal. Not only does this underscore our sustainability commitments but it is also expected to provide a lower-cost energy supply for our South African operations.”
