Following the success of the Glare Patrol Challenge, a global initiative to raise awareness about glare, The Lighting Police hosted an enlightening panel discussion to explore the widespread yet often underestimated issue of glare caused by artificial light.

Practical strategies to eliminate glare

Over several weeks, participants observed, documented, and shared instances of glare in their environments, resulting in 16 submissions from around the world. The Lighting Police advisory board members selected five cases out of the 16, offering actionable solutions and advice during the panel discussion on creating “healthier, safer and more comfortable spaces” through better lighting practices.

Moderated by lighting designer and founder of The Lighting Police platform Katia Kolovea, this global conversation featured expert insights from the esteemed advisory board:

  1. Philip Hammond, BHA School of Lighting & BHA Lighting Design (South Africa): Educating future designers on the significance of glare management.
  2. James Poore, JPLD (UK): Practical solutions for glare in hospitality and retail lighting.
  3. Lara Elbaz, Elbazgildemontes (Spain): Real-world applications and the importance of balancing light intensity and contrast.
  4. Shelley James, Age of Light Innovations (UK): The science of glare’s impact on vision, psychology, and aging eyes.
  5. Ximena Muñoz, Luxia Lighting (Chile): Managing glare in outdoor environments and project-specific strategies.
