LEGRAND’S extensive range of power
equipment encompasses miniature
circuit breakers (MCBs), moulded cir-
cuit breakers (MCCBs), surge protec-
tors, modular distribution blocks, air
circuit breakers, cast resin transform-
ers and capacitors, as well as industrial
sockets and wiring accessories.
“This range, whichmeets strin-
gent international and local safety
and quality specifications, has been
designed for easy selection, reliable
performance, efficient installation and
optimum safety,”claims Johan Bosch,
Legrand’s national sales manager.
“Legrand is committed to the manu-
facture of technologically advanced
products that meet the demands of
modern industrial, commercial and
residential environments. Products are
continually upgraded for improved ef-
ficiency and safety, enhanced aesthet-
ics and greater energy savings.

Meeting the demands of modern environments
Denver Technical Products offer high current ac measurement systems based on Rogowski technology. The
photograph shows a Rogowski coil bent into an oval 1 m across, connection cable length as specified by the
end-user. Signal conditioners provide standard outputs of 4-20 mA, 0-5, 0-10 V dc, etc.

High current measurement
with Rogowski technology
range of MCCBs has been extended
to now protect against overloads and
short-circuits, in electrical installa-
tions up to 630 A. These robust circuit
breakers are suitable for use in any
environment, including harsh corro-
sive conditions and high temperature
applications.”There are three units
in this range – DRX 125 (with ratings
from 15 A to 125 A), DRX 250 (with
ratings from 125 A to 250 A) and DRX
630 (with ratings from 320 A to 630 A).
These devices have a mechanical en-
durance up to 25 000 operations and
for enhanced safety, no live parts are
accessible once the system is securely
installed under a faceplate.
DRX 125 and DRX 250 units are
easily positioned and removed from
the DIN rail with an adaptor. All DRX
MCCBs can be plate mounted and
installed in a Legrand XL³ enclosure in
any position, including horizontally.
Simple and indelible marking on
the front of the MCCB clearly indicates
critical information that includes
thermal magnetic protection, nominal
current and breaking capacity.
(There are several breaking capacities
between 16 kVA and 50 kVA).
These circuit breakers operate in
ac or dc andwiring is via busbars or
cables. Specially designed accessories
facilitate easy wiring, quick installa-
tion and for enhanced safety, remote
tripping is allowed.These accessories
include cable spreaders, cage termi-
nals, rear terminals, insulating shields
and terminal shields. DRX 125 andDRX
250 devices have a hinge design so the
front panel can easily open and close.
Control and signalling auxiliaries
that simply clip on to the circuit
breaker include fault signals, which in-
dicate the state of the contacts or the
opening of the MCCB on a fault. Shunt
trips and under voltage releases allow
the remote tripping of a DRX unit.
SOUTH African homes and businesses are using
more technology than ever before tomanage qual-
ity of life and ensure competitiveness in the global
economy. Several of these technologies use‘smart’
components in the machinery. The local electricity
system, in contrast, has not changed in over more
than a decade, casting a dark blanket over the
country and our economy.

THE modular electronic contact
type PHE III voltage detectors
fromDehn are fully in accord-
ance with the latest IEC stand-
ard, SANS 61243-1 and bear
the SABS mark of approval. The
voltage detectors are designed
for safe testing of switchgear
installations and overhead lines
and are ideally suited for use in
confined systems. They have a
3 kV to 132 kV/50 Hz nominal
voltage range and can be used
indoors and outdoors, as well as
in wet weather conditio
An integrated self-testing
device automatically tests the
electronic circuit for correct
functioning when the PHE III
is switched on. A permanent

For increased security and to prevent
mishandling and the risk of accidents, a
padlock can be used to lock the rotary
handle. Legrand’s enhanced range of DRX
MCCBs ensures safe and reliable
switching, control, isolation and
long termprotection of low voltage
electrical lines.

According to Dudley Miller, general manager of
prepayment electricity meter specialist, Conlog,
prepayment meters offer an opportunity to peep
out fromunder this blanket by allowing customers
to not only track their energy usage more accu-
rately, but to also control what you are using.“Even
more beneficial, is that the movement towards
smart prepayment meters allows for better and
more detailed analytics of both the flow of energy
and the means to track this electricity for better man-
agement,”he says.
“This comprehensive and holistic approach enables
customers to reap the full benefit of their investment
and ensures sustained success, into the future,”says
Miller.
He explains that at present, Conlog has the world’s
largest installed base of prepaidmeters, spanning
more than 20 countries on four continents.“Fur-
thermore, over 70 utilities worldwide utilise our
solutions and consider the company their preferred
prepayment provider. With systems that are available
in English, Arabic, French, Spanish and Portuguese,
our products have been able to reachmillions,”adds
Miller.
Many industry firsts have been developed by
Conlog’s dedicated team at the Durban head of-
fice, including the standard for the secure transfer
of credit, StandardTransfer Specification (STS), an
IEC standard (62055-41); the industry’s standard
wallbase for electricity meters; the common vending
system and the first commercial scratch-card solu-
tion for prepayment.
Earlier in 2014, the Certification Committee of
ETHIC Intelligence, a leading international cer-
tification agency specialising in anti-corruption
compliance programmes, also awarded Conlog an
Anti-corruption Compliance SystemCertification for
its programme to prevent corruption.
“We strive for excellence in all areas of our busi-
ness and are proud of the fact that our meters are
manufactured to the highest quality and standards.
Our focus now is on smart meters, and we are espe-
cially excited to witness the value proposition that
they will offer society, especially in terms of greater
individual electricity empowerment and energy
management,”says Miller.

The insulating rod is housed
in a grey 30 mmdiameter
glass fibre reinforced polyester

battery can easily be exchanged
by hand and low batteries are
indicated by both illuminated
LEDs and an additional acoustic
signal when switching on the
voltage detector. A selector
switch for nominal voltages can
bemoved into twopositions for
either 3.3 – 11 kVor 11 – 33 kV
