September solution
Crossed lines
"Look at this," said Peter to Jack, pointing to the
triangle of six dots he had neatly marked on a
piece of paper. "I can cross these six dots out
with three strokes, without takingmy pen off
the paper. Easy! Now, here is a puzzle for you.
Here is a square of nine dots and all you have
to do is cross them all out in four strokes, with-
out taking the pen from the paper, of course."
Jack tried again and again, but there was
always one dot left over, which he could not
cross out. Can you do better? If you can, here
is an even harder poser. How can these 16
dots be crossed out with just six lines, without
taking your pen from the paper?
The shy squirrel
There is no clear answer to this puzzle. It
depends on whether you emphasise walk-
ing round the place where the squirrel is, or
whether you emphasise seeing the squirrel
from all directions
Under normal circumstances, you would
naturally do both because the thing you are
walking round is still and you see it from all
sides.
The Greens walked round the squirrel's posi-
tion, but that is all. Does this count?
Hear is the situation to compare it with...
Two cautious boxers are circulating each
other in the ring. Each boxer is actually mov-
ing in a circle, as the spectators can clearly see,
but they are always facing each other. No-one
would say that one of themwas going round
the other – boxers are equal, and neither of
them is 'on the inside'
