ROYAL Philips, a global leader in
lighting, recently unveiled a stunning
lightingmakeover of the historic and
iconic Castle of Good Hope in Cape
Town tomark the conclusion of the
company’s fifth consecutive pan-Afri-
can Cairo to Cape Town roadshow.
Philips had committed to lighting
up and illuminating iconic monu-
ments in every country visited during
the roadshow and it provided“stun-
ning”lightingmakeovers of historic,
well-recognisedmonuments includ-
ingThe Baron Place in Cairo, Maqam
Echahid in Algiers, Wilaya City Hall of
Casablanca, Kenya National Archives
building in Nairobi, Nigerian National
Arts Theatre in Lagos and the historic
Black Star Monument in Accra.
Philips’latest LED lighting technol-
ogy was used at the Castle of Good
Hope to create dynamic and colourful
lighting effects that bring this monu-
ment to life at night while realising
energy savings of 80% over the tradi-
tional lighting.
An architectural masterpiece with
a rich history and unique design, the
magnificent Castle is a major interna-
tional tourist attraction and Philips’
visual lighting concept will give the
building an impressive look, with the
world famous Table Mountain acting
as a splendid backdrop. The Philips
Vaya flood LED range with a spectrum
of red, blue and green lighting brings
a mystical atmosphere to the Castle
at night.
JJ van Dongen, senior vice-presi-
dent and CEO, Philips Africa, says,“For
us the challenge was to devise effec-
tive lighting that would enhance the
beauty of the site without overwhelm-
ing it. We are delighted with the final
result and hope that this enhanced
lighting will improve the tourism
value of the Castle. In addition, we
believe this spectacular illumination of
the Castle of Good Hope contributes
hugely to Cape Town’s unique distinc-
tion as theWorld Design Capital of
2014”.
The Castle of Good Hope is the
oldest surviving colonial building in
South Africa. Constructed between
1666 and 1679 by the Dutch East
India Company, it was once a fort, but
today functions as a museumof the
Cape’s early days. It is an example of
a‘star’fort, and attracts thousands of
visitors annually and it is believed that
the spectacular Philips LED lighting
is likely to significantly improve the
tourism andmarketing value of the
monument.
Calvyn Gilfellan, CEO, of the Castle
of Good Hope, says it is“great that the
iconic Table Mountain will now have a
wonderfully well-lit Castle at its feet”.
“We are extremely proud to work in
the Castle of Good Hope; to see the
visual and perceptual transformation
of this historic building is magnificent
and a real credit to Philips.”
The advantages of the LED lighting
provided at the Castle of Good Hope
include:
• Dynamic lighting that makes it pos-
sible to adjust the atmosphere of
the site (change of intensity and
colour).
• A longer lifespan of the installation:
around 50 000 hours compared to
12 000 hours with conventional
lighting.
• A reduction in maintenance costs:
LED luminaires require little main-
tenance while cutting energy con-
sumption by 80%.

EUROLUX has been appointed as the
sole South African distributor of HA-
DAR UK, the hazardous area lighting
division of A-Belco Hazardous.
The range is designed for Zone 1
and Zone 2 areas in the oil, gas,
petrochemical, pharmaceutical
andmarine industries, whilst
also suitable for use in food
mills which create combustible
dust. Eurolux will be stocking a
number of these products, with
the full product range available
on order from them.
Elaborating on their decision to
stock HADAR products in South
Africa, Shaun Bouchier, director at
Eurolux, says the local and regional
industry can benefit from a quality
product such as this.“The HADAR
range offers innovative, modular
and lowmaintenance designs that
incorporate the latest technologies,
thus ensuring a comprehensive
lighting product offering.”He adds
that all HADAR products are ATEX and
Hazardous lighting products for Zone 1 and Zone 2 applications
IECex certified, and that all certifica-
tion and product specifications are
available on the HADAR website.
The products are particularly suited
to offshore oil and gas applications,
whether these are fixed platforms,
mobile drilling rigs or other vessels.
Health and safety considerations
are critical offshore, with rigs and oil
vessels mostly operating in danger-
ously flammable environments, thus
products have to withstand corrosive
sea air and extreme temperatures.
Maintenance is another considera-
tion in these environments due to
the high costs of shutdown; therefore
engineers demand products that
promise a long lamp life with simple
maintenance.
Eurolux stocks the Ex emb fluo-
to fire exit signs, allowing wall or ceiling
mounting. These come complete with
two PL 18W compact fluorescent
lamps for mains operation, while also
offering a three hour emergency option.
The lightweight bulkhead is simple to
install andmaintain and features short
gaskets for proven ingress protection.
The HADAR Zone 1 Ex de Floodlight
(HDL 117), 250W and 400W, are tradi-
tionally designed Ex de floodlights that
are competitively priced. Models also
on offer are 150W, 250W and 400W
E40 tubular discharge lamps, as well as
a 500Wmax tungsten halogen lamp.
A HADAR marine grade aluminium
alloy floodlight (HDL 227) is also
stocked by Eurolux, available in both
250W and 400Woptions, with high
performance output and designed to
withstand highly corrosive and Zone 2
hazardous area environments. This EEx
nR restricted breathing floodlight fea-
tures a compact design that is suitable
for use with 150W, 250W and
400Whigh pressure sodiumor metal
halide tubular E40 lamps.
The HDL103 HADAR LED luminaire is
available in green for helidecks, red for
obstruction, or white for general light-
ing. This unit is available in constant
light output or flashingmode, as well
as 24 V or 100 to 254 V ac/dc, with a
five year warranty and expected lamp
life in excess of 10 years. It conforms
to ICAO Annex 14 Volume II, CAP437
for helideck perimeter lighting and
CAP168 for obstruction lighting, and
utilises six 1.2W LEDs that provide 360°
coverage.

rescent luminaire (HDL 100) which is
available in standard 2 ft, 4 ft and 5
ft models, including an emergency
backup option. Its modular construc-
tion and built-in unistrut channel
means that it can easily be fitted, in a
variety of ways.
“The self-contained lamp envelope
enables quick and easy cleaning
and allows for lamp changes to be
achieved with the minimumof fuss
or disruption,”says Bouchier.“It also
offers long term ingress protection,
the latest End of Life technology (EoL)
and voltage protection (built into its
electronic control gear), making it
one of the most advanced fittings on
the market.”
Also on offer are HADAR’s Zone 1
Ex Embmodular LED luminaire flood-
light/bulkhead (HDL 106), available in
10° narrow beam, 30° mediumbeam,
50° wide beam angle and a 90° extra
wide option. Weighing only 6 kg, they
can generate a similar light output
to that of a much larger and heavier,
high intensity discharge luminaire.
These luminaires have a five year war-
ranty, no inrush current (allowing for
instant on/off), low power consump-
tion and a life expectancy of 100 000
hours.
The rugged HDL 106 is vibration
resistant due to its encapsulated
control gear, while its modular con-
struction allows the modules to be
ordered in a half unit, single unit or
double and triple interlinked, to rep-
licate a large 250W and 400WHID
floodlight. Another model available
from Eurolux is the HADAR bulkhead
luminaire (HDL 109), standard and
emergency backup, as well as addi-
tional durable vinyl’s to convert these
ELECTRICITY+CONTROL has pub-
lished a new handbook – Transform-
ers and substations: 2014. Technical
director, Ian Jandrell, in his foreword,
reminds us that,“Once upon a time,
the substation was the‘building over
Transformers and substations: 2014
there’, or the‘room in the basement’;
and the transformer was‘the thing
with tubes that hums’. The articles in
Transformers
and
Substations: 2014
show that those perceptions are no
longer relevant.
The four chapters cover:
• Design and manufacture of trans-
formers.
• Design and installation of a substa-
tion.
• Substation automation.
• Maintenance.
